Canon SD 550 does not work when flash setting is ON

I cannot take any pictures when the flash setting is 'ON'. This problem occurs when the camera is either in Manual or Auto mode. All settings with the flash On like red eye reduction, auto flash or slow sync dont work. The shutter release button seems to not go further than half press. The picture does not get taken. The camera works normally when I turn off the flash. I tried the last resort by reseting my camera to factory settings. Does anyone have an idea why this might be happening? Any solutions out there? Thanks

Exactly the same problem with my Canon PowerShot SD550. Have you been able to get the camera fixed?

same problem here...cannot get the picture to take with the flash on. Very frustrating. Took it to a local camera shop and they said it would be $134 to send it out to get it looked at. This is not a good answer! Any help?

Same problem.....tried many approaches to fixing, even purchasing a new battery pack because I also keep getting a message that says "change battery pack". The new one all charged up made no difference.

    Going through the same thing.
Checked internal connections and visual inspection, no help.
Thinking of replacing the flash circuitry from a donor camera ( SD500 , 550 or IXUS 750 )

I have the same problem. Cannon customer support says it will fix this for $119 + 8 for shipping... or you can get a refurbished SD 800is for $140+10 for shipping with w/ a 6 month warranty... what a deal ;~)

I replaced the flash circuitry and it still doesn't work. Does your camera make a sound like there's something loose in it? Mainly the flash circuitry part. I bought a new one and that one also makes the strange sound. I'm not sure if I should ask for a refund.

One thing I noticed while doing the replacement is that the camera behaves as if it doesn't detect the flash circuitry. what I mean is, when I took the flash circuitry out and powered it up, it behaves like it does with that part in it. So it seems like there's a connection problem where it doesn't not detect that the flash is there.

I bought a new camera, an olympus. It was cheaper than getting the canon fixed, or should I say, just sending it back to canon to start. With obsolecence, I intend to buy the cheapest electronics since they only last about 2 years regardless of price. It's too bad, I liked the canon a lot. Corporate America rules! Julie Z

Canon 550 ex speedlight - flashes okay. Won't sink with 60d (tried different cameras at dealer - same problem) Camera is okay .

Bruce,
Try these steps:
1. Set camera to manual2. Set shutter to 1/60
3. Set aperture to F5.6
4. ASA/ISO 200
5. 550EX on hotshoe
6. Do not set on slave or master
7. Turn on flash

Display must shows, ETTL.
If that doesn't work, you have to use the flash on manual.
Some of this model will not work fully on ATG Canon EOS-1D C, ATG Canon EOS-1D X IR, Canon EOS-1D X/60D/T4i because this flash is over 20 years old.

Unless you would want it to be modified by me.
But that can be costly when you can get the 580EX II for less than $425.00 USD.

All of the pictures are grainy and very dark- not usable camera at all- less than 2 years old I have re formatted the SD card, changed the batteries, and reset the camera to default settings

To fix your issue with the Canon Powershot SX110 IS Digital Camera, try cleaning the lens. A huge issue with malfunctioning pictures can be as objective as a dirty lens. If that doesn't solve the issue, try to make sure that your flash is working to its full power. If you are taking a picture in a low-light area and the flash isn't giving off a strong enough light, this will cause grainy/noisy dark photos. Lastly, try playing around the with settings on the configuration screen. Sometimes digital cameras can malfunction, even after reformatting, and will apply alternate settings from what you originally had set.

Hope this helps!

How do you take a night shot? and also, how do you turn off the flash? I have a Cannon Powershot SD 550 Digital Elph I have lost my manual.

If you push the button with the flash icon and watch the screen, stop when you see the flash in a circle with a diagonal line through it. You can download a copy of the manual from the support section of the Canon website.

Canon SD 550-- sensor problem? Bought 3/2006 and have had no problems. Suddenly, LED screen went black--shows nothing and cannot take a picture altho will flash and record black picture. Shooting...

The shutter of the camera is not opening that is why every picture taken is recorded black. It is a mechanical problem and probably has nothing to do with the sensor. Not very expensive

Canon sd 550 (and sd 200) shutter speed

If you check out a review site such as www.steves digi cams. com or even the Canon site to check out the spec of the camera to discover what shutter speeds are available. When shooting fast moving subjects try panning the camera on the object as you press the release this will[to a degree] keep the primary image sharp[ish] whilst blurring the background
