If the computer is using Windows XP, do the following to restart the system:
•Click the Start button
•Click Turn Off Computer.
•Cick Restart
The computer will restart after the shutdown process finishes.

Power the PC down then power it up. As soon as the power comes on, Keep pushing F8 until you get a start menu. Safe mode will be one of the options.

you need to press the

ctrl + F11 as soon as you see the Dell logo screen when you turn on the computer.

the trick is. as soon as you turn on the computer, press and hold on the ctrl key then keep tapping the F11 key.

The two biggest culprits would be:

the power supply and the motherboard.

I'd start with the power supply since it's cheap and easy to install.

Find a local computer shop that sells 'em.

Make sure they've got a 100% return policy.

Swap 'em, if it works problem solved.

If not it's probably the motherboard. You could always have a local tech check it out.

Make sure they provide FREE diagnostics. It shouldn't cost you anything to have ti looked at.

Go to Staples and purchase a Linksys USB wireless-G (only G needed - the new "N" protocol is overkill) adapter (~$60.00). Insert the Linksys CD and follow the instructions. When prompted, plug the USB adapter into the Dell (frt or back) doesn't matter. If his "roomies" have security enabled on their router, you'll need to know the level, password/passphrase, and the network name that they assigned.

1 Turn on the computer.
2 When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
3 In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, click Restore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlight Restore, and then press <Enter>.
4 When a warning message appears stating that all data will be lost, click Confirm, or press <Tab> to highlight Confirm and then press <Enter>.

The Progress window will appear. Once the restore process starts, Dell PC Restore by Symantec usually takes about 8 to 10 minutes to finish.

When the restore process is complete, the following message will appear:
The system recovery process was successful.
5 Click Finish or press <Tab> to highlight Finish and then press <Enter> to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received

WARNING !!! Be sure to back up everything you want to keep. This will wipe out your hard drive.

strike F2 for setup utility and then find there "use default configuration or default optimized configuration" (something like that" then press F10 to save and exit.
