I just purchased a used 2001 Yamaha XL800 wave runner PWC, it has 157 hours. I was just (friend) told it has electronically controlled guillotine values in the exhaust system and they need to be cleaned or replaced around 150 hrs of use, is this true? Only have started the unit up with no experience in the water yet, so I can't tell if there is a real power issue??? IIf cleaning is needed at 150 hours is there another option such as an additive to help clean the system rather than removal of guillotine values? Does the XL800 rteally have guillotine valves in the exhaust system? PWC newbee.
Yes. Those are called power valves. The purpose of those valves is they create a variable height on the exhaust ports. This is desirable because it gives you good low RPM power by keeping the height of the exhaust port low, and as the revs of the engine build, the exhaust valves raise up which opens the exhaust port up and allows the engine to create more peak HP due to the higher exhaust port and larger area of the exhaust port.
There is no additive that will clean your power valves. They have to come out.
