Zone 2 volume control

After 6.5 hours, I am now listening to music outside on my patio using my rxv-1600!
Connect your speakers to the Presence Zone 2(3) output on back. Then power up amp and select zone 2 on front of amp. Nothing will happen, because as I found out, you must route an input to zone 2 or 3. Which is cool, because you can listen to something outside that is different from your inside.
You select what to route to the zone by pressing Zone Control button, just right of zone 2 and 3 button. While you see red zone light blinking, rotate input select knob to prefered input, i.e. radio/cd/aux/etc... also, you can adjust volume by pressing zone control and turning up the volume knob, only while ZONE light is blinking.

it might be raising the volume but for zone 2-- on the remote select zone 1--that would be my first check as my friends denon did the same thing

Look on page 99 of the manual. It's a parameter you have an option to change to Variable. Fix lets Zone 2 or 3 have a Fixed volume level independent of the volume control on the Yamaha. Variable makes them dependent on the control.

Setting the RX-V861 remote control to operate Zone 2:

1. Using a ballpoint pen or similar object and press the [CODE SET] button RX-V861 remote control. The[TRANSMIT INDICATOR]on the remote should flash twice.
2. Using the [NUMERICAL KEY PAD] on the remote and key in 9992, the [TRANSMIT INDICATOR] should flash.

Assigning the receivers internal amp for Zone 2:

1. Set the remote control selector to [AMP]. (Located to the right of the volume buttons on the Remote.).
2. Press the [SET MENU]button on the remote control.
3. Arrow down to Manual Setup and press the Enter button on the remote control.
4. Arrow to the [SOUND MENU] option and press the [ENTER] button on the remote control.
5. Arrow to Speaker Set and press the [ENTER] button on the remote control.
6. Arrow to the EXTRA SP ASSIGN and select ZONE2
7. Press the [RETURN] button on the remote control to exit out and return to the Manual Setup.

NOTES: There is an option for setting the Maximum Volume and Initial Volume in the Zone Set menu.

• Max Volume: This is an optional feature but isrecommended to prevent the accidental change in volume levels thatcould damage the speakers and receiver.
• Initial Volume: This is also a great feature that would seamlessly start the volume level for the second or third zone at the desired level.

We do not recommend using any Speaker Selector boxes to enable more than the recommended number of speakers per terminal.
Controlling Zone 2 using the RX-V861 remote control:

1. If the Main Zone on the receiver is on, press the [POWER BUTTON]down and while holding that button down press the [PHONO]/[**] button on the remote. The [TRANSMIT INDICATOR] will light up.
2. You will not be able to use the following buttons on the remote: (Pressing any other button will cause the remote to exit Zone 2 mode. [POWER], [STANDBY], [VOLUME], [MUTE] and the [INPUT SELECTOR] buttons [DVD], [CD], etc.)

you have to turn off zone 2 it mybe on the back of the remote unit the door after you do so the master volume will work

Logitech recommends that zone 2 is controlled using device mode on your Harmony remote. Controlling zone 1 and zone 2 simultaneously within activities may lead to the AV Receiver turning on and off unexpectedly as you switch between activities. For example, if you try to turn on zone 2 within an activity, it may turn on or off zone 1 and vice versa. Controlling zone 2 in device mode will prevent this from happening.

i have the same problem. i have a rx-v661. i goto the zone 2 settings and try to change the volume and it says VOL FIX. I cannot hear anything out of zone 2. It takes the current volume that is in zone 2, but i cannot hear anything. it has been working fine for at least a year.

Sounds like the volume control on zone 2 is your culpret. You should set up zone 2 to have a "fixed" output instead of "variable" it's in zone 2/3 setup. whats happening is you are overloading the volume control from the zone volume on the receiver and getting feedback to the receiver and shorting it out. What you do is put zone 2 to fixed output. set the vol control to 3/4 then adjust the vol to relatively loud and exit out of settings. this will be your max volume setting. Now, on to your problem.Unplug the receiver. There is an internal fuse that could have blown, not to likely but it's possible. You have to take the top off the receiver with a #1 phillips or a T10 torx they vary. It's about 7 screws, pop off the top and look from front to back, you will see 1 or 2 fuses near the AC plug port. Sometimes they are gray or white and you cannot visibly tell if it's bad. If you have a multimeter, set it tone resistance. Then put your leads on either side of the fuse, if you hear tone the fuse is ok. If not check your leads by touching them together and you will hear tone then test again. If you don't have tone, your fuse is bad. Radio Shack should stock the fuse you need. If you don't already know this, there are 2 Power switches for your unit. Front of receiver bottom left corner "Master Power" and normal Power switch "Main Power" check them both. If your fuses are good and power is good, you have bad transistors internally and it needs to go to service. check www.yamahausa.com support and service, and you can find the closest authorized service center to send it to. If you mail it out directly to the service center rather than taking it to a dealer, you will save some money and get it back faster. Lastly, pull your zone 2 volume control and look for black marks on it or white chalky substance. "oxidation". If you don't mind spending a little money on the system, hardwire the speakers thru and replace the volume control with an IR receiver. If you could control the zone from the zone by pointing the remote at the volume control you had an IR vol control. You really didn't need the vol part. Xantech or Proficient make good IR receivers that aren't too expensive and will keep this from happening again. Go back into zone 2 set up and turn volume fix off then turn up volume for zone 2.

turn your headset off. when you turn on yourheadset back on , push the volume you wish to control the volume with. this buttom you choose shound be your volume up button now.
