Some DVDs will play and some won't.

I recently received the entire series of West Wing. I tried this morning to start with Disk 1 of Season One but it won't play. No other disks in the series will play either. Other DVDs I've I tried in the same player work fine.

I learned that the first few season of West Wing were recorded in a different format. I bought another DVD player ($30) and they work fine.

DVD won't play

Netflix doesn't know what they're talking about. I looked it up - your DVD player doesn't have an autoplay feature. Can you try the DVD on another DVD player. Computers DVD drives generally read them differently - and decode them differently, than a regular DVD player. Also, if your DVD drive is a writable drive, it will have a stronger laser than your DVD player. I think it's likely the disk is damaged, slightly. If you cleaned your DVD's laser, it might be able to read it well enough to play - or it might not. I started having problems like this with a few of my own DVDs before my DVD player's laser went out. Basically it's a combination of laser quality and disc quality. If it remains just this one disk, I'd suggest leaving it alone. But if you start running into this problem on other disks as well, you'll probably want to have the laser replaced in your DVD player.

You probably will need to replace the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) in your laptop. Go to Google and search for "Dell Inspirion 6000 CD/DVD drive" to find a replacement.
To be sure it's the CD/DVD drive that's defective and not your operating system software, you could also try to boot from a boot-able DVD disk.

DVD MALFUNCTION

DVDs and CDs are formated with regional encoding 1-6. If your player does not support the format, it will not play the disk. You might try looking up your brand/model player online to see if it has a regional patch code which you can enter via remocon.
