Vizio remote control not working

I just bought a new VIZIO 47 inch TV from costco.  The remote was working initially, but stopped working except for the volume.  I just got the remote replaced, and now it doesn't work at all.  any suggestions for help? My remote control was working fine yesterday, and today it's not working except for the volume.  The tv is working fine, but turning it on, or switching components or the menu only work on the buttons beside the tv.  Would a new remote help, or is it a tv problem?  And would a Universal remote do anything?  Thanks.

Vizio tech posted this for me a few minutes ago and it WORKED! Remove the batteries from the remote.  With the batteries removed, press each button once.  When that has been done, put the batteries back in and press these buttons and release each one: DVD, RCVR, CABLE, and finally TV.
William: See if the remote works.

Go with Solution #2 but the button your looking for is on the bottom of the remote. There a tv button on the top but the top buttons are for determining the source into the tv. the bottom buttons determine which device you are controlling.

  • Anonymous Sep 17, 2012

This worked for me, but only after I deduced that the remote for my 32" is different. The source buttons are four rows from the top; the device control buttons are the top row. Thanks!

What is solution #2?

  • by_Rock Nov 12, 2013

The one that posted by user called "antn".

  • by_Rock Nov 12, 2013

SOLUTION #2: Hi, I had the same problem. My vizio remote for my 42 inch 2 month old vizio also seemed to stop working. Here's what I did: My vizio remote (like most remote's nowadays) was designed for multiple components (tv, dvd, vcr, etc). All you need to do to make the remote work again is set it back to tv. Now, the confusing thing about vizio remotes is that they actually have TWO places where you can switch the remote to the appliance you want to control. One is on top of the remote, the other is on the BOTTOM. Switch it back to TV using the BOTTOM. My remote had stopped working because I had inadvently switched it to another component on the BOTTOM component switch.

I bought the Vizio 47" XVT from Costco as well.  The remote worked during the set up and a few hours after.  It then stopped working.
I unplugged power to the tv and removed the batteries out of the remote.  When I plugged the tv back up and installed the batteries, the remote worked again.  Its been a few hours and it is still working.  If this continues, I am going to take this tv back to Costco.
Try this and good luck.

Take it back, mine is continually happening. Its good for a week and tjen the remote stops working all day. The following morning it works again.

The problem is the remote that you received with the tv is built to operate multiple items. anyway there should be a button that says TV on the top or side of the remote usually. It is set to another mode and that is why mothing works except volume.

For the Vizio remote that flips open (VRU10), press and hold the red circle "record" button and the green bar buttons for 5 seconds. This resets the remote.

I read this on another vizio problem report site: stick a piece of blue painters masking tape over the ir sensor on the tv. i was skeptical, thinking someone was having a chuckle but what could it hurt? i didn't have blue, so i tried a piece of plain brown masking tape. i placed over the 1/8x1/2 inch barely visable rectangle in the lower right hand corner of the frame on my M3D470KDE vizio. it has performed perfectly since. i believe there is a source of stray radiation of some kind in the room from some electronic device (router, computer, whatever). the tape must filter out this source and yet allow the remote infrared signal to get through. cheap and easy, and worth a try.

Make sure none of the buttons are locked into a constant pushed in position; look closely at all the buttons. If this happens the remote will not respond to any other input. This happens, on occasion, with the CC button on my Vizio remote.

THIS PAST WEEK, I HAD OCCASION TO USE MY VIZIO REMOTE(XRT 510) TO SWITCH FROM HDMI1 TO HDMI2. WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO DO SO. I HADN'T USED THE REMOTE FOR OVER A YEAR, ALWAYS USED REMOTE PROVIDED BY MY CABLE COMPANY. I REMOVED THE BATTERIES AND NOTICED THE TERMINALS TO THE PC BOARD HAD A BUILDUP OF A WHITE SUBSTANCE SIMILIAR TO THE BUILDUP IN CAR BATTERIES. I REMOVED THE COVER (VERY CAREFULLY) AND CLEANED THE TERMINALS.
I ADDED NEW BATTERIES, THE REMOTE NOW WORKS LIKE NEW. IF YOUR NOT USING REMOTE FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, ALWAYS REMOVE THE BATTERIES. HOPE THIS HELPS.

SOURCE: Vizio 47" Costco hdtv has red floating areas!

After posting this problem we did call Vizio. They sent out a repairman (had to wait over a week) who fixed it by: Replacing the LVDS cable and the main board. (Just like somebody on this blog wrote somewhere!) We also had just previously called our cable company who came out (also free) and checked our system only to find the cable running around the house to the tv needed replacing as it was sending zillions of errors. The red flowing problem (called "red pixilation") was due to the Vizio LVDS cable and main board being faulty from the factory.

We're sorry to hear about Vizio TV remote, but we would be happy to help you with getting your DISH Networkremote to control your TV. We're going to start by pressing and holding the TVbutton located on the top of your remote until all mode button back lights comeon, and then release. Use the number buttons to enter the codes for your Vizio TV; here some of the codes we currently have: 505, 598, 627, 520, and 766. Press the pound (#) button. To check that the code works try severaldifferent functions on the remote to make sure it will properly operate the TV.Remember that some codes may not be compatible with your equipment. If this isthe case, try the other codes listed for that device until you find one that iscompatible with your equipment.

We hope this helps and thank you for being a valued DISH Network customer!
