1999 Durango will not start, no fire

It wouldn't stop the engine from turning over while trying to start. But it can make engine not start or run poorly

indicates a rectifier problem in the alternator
remove it and have it bench tested

Hi Sheila, i'm glad to help. 99 Durango's with thew 5.2 liter engine were good about the Crank Sensors going bad. Now, as I can't say that securily with out diagnosis. If it were my vehicle and knowing what I know about no starts, that is diffinently where I would start. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Sheila.

have a lot of things on key ring, replace ignition switch. pull key shake ignition switch ,if stops bad switch

The first thing to do is take the battery to any Autozone and have it tested, my bet is it is open inside the battery.

Test the neutral safety switch but doing the following steps.

1)foot on brake
2)turn key to on position
3)shift lever to neutral (N)
4)start the engine
5)shift the lever to Park (P)

If the engine can start at N and not at park then it's the neutral safety switch.

I have the same problem, after couple days of not driving it the battery went dead. After charging it back up the radio worked again, but then started doing some other freaky things. Any solutions out there?

Probably the battery. Take it the chain auto parts place and they will test it for you.

lets forget about the items you replaced.This sounds like a differnt problem;1the reason you get the gas smell is because the engine is not fireing and gas is is waiting about in the cyclenders waiting to fire: my main suspect in this case would be battery/alternator;; if your air filter is ok.? try jump starting the car if this successful then its a battery/alternator problem.hope this helps.adrian
