My type pics etc looked squished horizontally in wide mode but leave a black border in fit mode (though then the ratio looks correct). My computer only has 4 resolution settings, so I cannot set the correct resolution. Is there any fix, or do I have too much screen for my older computer?

Make sure that your software, that you view your pictures with, falls into the 'box format' of 640x480, 1024x768, 1280x1024, etc. Background pictures are typically streched to fit the wider screens. You can change that by right clicking on your desktop.. in XP it is the 2nd tab, on the right side, you can choose stretch or ? Some will give you black bars but no skewing. Then you can adjust your monitor's resolution downward to enlarge your pictures, or leave it at a higher resolution if you don't mind the borders.

It sounds like your input signal is in 4:3 and the projector is in 16:9.
You need to adjust the "Resize" mode.
On your remote, press the "Resize" button (bottom-right of the remote, looks like a screen with two arrows pointing left and right [< >]) until it is in "Normal" mode. If that does not work, try setting it to "Border".
Once you change the resolution to a smaller size and you see the black border, go into the monitor's menu and there should be settings for the Horizontal and Vertical size/position. Adjust those until it looks correct.
is it posible the menu settings have been changed, go into menu select picture check to see what mode it is on ie; 4.3 16.9 etc, set to wide screen 16.9
