Magic chef microwave shuts down

When I pop popcorn, the microwave will shut down all power when done. It will come back on in about 20 - 30 minutes. I tried squeezing/tightening the fuse holder contacts and still had the same problem. It acts like something is overheating but only does it when popcorn is popped. Magic Chef MCO-153UW

My Magic chef is also doing the same thing. Shutting down after popcorn. It's not even a bag of popcorn- those tend to get quite steamy, but using a microwave bowl...very frustrating! At first tried to unplug, and thought it was a fuse, but now that I've seen others have the same problem, I guess the microwave just sucks. And everyone told me Magic chef was a good brand.

SHUTS DOWN AFTER MICRO WAVE POPCORN / MAGIC CHEIF

  • seawolfdon Aug 17, 2008

I hhave had the same problem since it was.brand new.

I had the repair man look at it under the warranty. He said it is a problem with the under counter Magic Chef brand.

Try putting a cup of water in the microwave while ccoking the popocarn. Sounds strange but it does help.

I just noticed my first post looks like I am typing while asleep.

I am going to try this again.

Magic Chef microwave model MCO153UWF -> under cabinet with stove vent micrsowave -> same POPCORN pecularity. Shuts down for 1/2 hour after completing cooking. Sometimes, doesn't make it to the end of popping cycle. Glass of water in micro-safe glass does help. Suspect some sort of sensor going awry. IS IT WORTH IT TO HAVE WARRANTY REPAIR WORK ? Contemplating.

I have the same problem with popcorn as well as bacon. The darn thing clicks off and goes dark. After 10 minutes or so, the display lights come on again. This is extremely annoying. I am going to try the solutions suggested by the other posters.

Same here with popcorn. Just as you said 25 minutes and she's back on. Thanks for the tip !!!

  • TomV999 Mar 29, 2009

I have exactly the same problem with popcorn, yet I can cook for much longer periods of time with other food so it cannot be overheating.

This is baffling. Does anybody know what is going on?

We had the same problem with our brand new Magic Chef. Before going through the trouble of taking it back I called Home Depot. After talking to a Home Depot Rep I am told that the overheat sensor is under the glass plate directly beneath the popcorn bag. Popcorn gets very hot and the heat of the popcorn causes the sensor to shut the machine down. I would imagine this would be the same for a baked potato.
Very poor design.
I was told to put a microwave safe plate down and put the popcorn bag on it. This should help to reduce the heat and not trip the sensor.
A safety sensor is great, but not if it keeps tripping the machine and shutting down!

I have exactly the same problem with my Magic Chef. Microwave oven is brand new, it's actually the second one I've had in a week. First one did it the night I installed, OTR. I exchanged it yesterday and tried a back of popcorn as soon as I had the replacement installed. Same thing. Not using the popcorn setting by the way. Set the oven for 2:55 as that seems to be the magic number for getting all the corn popped. My theory is the steam generated by the popcorn is some how tripping a thermal cut off switch.

I am having the same problem with the microwave shutting down but mine shut down and it was not cooking anything at the time. It has completely cut off and I can't figure out why. I checking my breakers to make sure nothing had tripped and I even plugged it into a different wall socket and it still will not cut on. Can someone please tell me what to do to fix this problem? The microwave is not even a year ole yet and it was working ok before it shut down. Any help is appreciated on how to fix this.

I use mine and set it to reheat something and it shuts down. I don't understand what is going on. Can someone help me figure it out. This was in our 5th wheel when we purchased it. Don't get it! Why stop working in the middle of the cooking cycle. Then we push the start and it continues to cook. Go figure.

I'm having exactly the same problem with our Magic Chef, with Popcorn and with nuking potatoes. It does seem to be steam related.

If you read the owners manuaul, when heat from the rangetop below creates too much heat the fan will come on atomacitcally to reduce heat of internal parts of the microwave.. So I think when cooking a potato or bag of popcorn turn the exhaust fan on low to reduce heat builduldup,

Shut's off after cooking popcorn, only popcorn, won't restart for 15 too30min.

Sounds like the magnetron is over heating. Try putting a 4 0z cup of water in the oven along side the popcorn bag. See if this helps. Usually, the oven only runs 2 to 2.5 minutes for a bag of popcorn. You may have to experiment with the slightly different cooking time...

MCD1611W New, popping popcorn in glass MW corn popper. 3-4 minutes to pop. After popped I open the door and after a few seconds the MW shuts down completely, no lights, no response to pad pushing.

Popcorn is a low-moisture food which can cause a microwave to overheat, as can a failure of the cooling fan or blocked vents.

You should always turn a paper plate upside-down on the turntable (slightly off-center for better heating) and place the popcorn container on top of that.

The paper plate elevates the popcorn for better exposure to the energy and protects the turntable from excessive heat.

Placing food off-center instead of in the center increases exposure to the energy and prevents the same spot on the turntable from being overheated repeatedly, which leads to material fatigue and cracking.

It's also a good idea to put about 1/2 cup of water in a 1-cup microwave-safe container in the corner of the oven when cooking low-moisture foods like popcorn, bacon, and potatoes.

The microwave's magnetron has a thermal protector (thermostat, TCO, or thermal fuse) attached to it.

If the magnetron gets too hot, it can be damaged or destroyed, so the thermal protector opens and disconnects the power to the whole oven.

If it is a resettable device, the power will be restored when the device cools. If it is not resettable, the device must be replaced.

Shuts down for 5 minutes

I have the same problem with my new magic cheff over the stove microwave oven. I call magic chef and they gave me the 800 number for the service center (1-800-775-0202). When I described the problem they told me to just put a plate under the popper and this wouldn't happen anymore. I haven't tried it yet but here's hoping.

Oven turns off

Hi,

You are running the risk of damaging the Magnatron by doing this.

Check the packets you are using, you will have to reduce your power output.

This is because microwaves act by being absorbed by water. There is very little in popcorn and in fat. Once this has been evaporated, the microwave energy builds up (as it is still being produced - but not absorbed), and ends up cooking the magnatron itself.

I have seen countless posts on here after cooking popcorn!

More fun on the hob anyway - and cheaper to buy in bulk!

Magic chef over the oven microwave shuts off.

Is not normal for a microwave to shutdown after 4 minutes of operation.
From the info you are providing, It looks like the magnetron might be overheating causing the thermal fuse to shut it down until it cools down. There may also be a loose connection in one of the switches or a cold solder joint in the low voltage power supply.
I would suggest to check and make sure that the fans are functional, If always did; it could be that there isn't much air circulation where the appliance was installed.

The cooling fan is a must!

Otherwise, the magnetron will be ruined, and that drives up the repair cost.

Magic Chef Microwave looses power when making popcorn

That does indeed sound like the mag is overheating and the thermostat is tripping, but it's probably not the steam.

Do you feel a good amount of air flowing through the vents?

If the cooling fan is not running or the air vents are blocked, that wil allow the magnetron to overheat.

If air flow is not a problem, then you may have a defective magnetron.

Assuming it's still under warranty, it would be best to let a Magic Chef-authorized servicer handle it.
