restart your computer witht he XP cd in your drive and maiing sure it boots to cd by either pressing F12 or going into your bios and setting the priority to cd first then hard drive second after you have done this if it still cant see the hard drive then the hard drive has developed a fault and will need replacing if you havent formatted it yet try and see if it boots up to windows 7 if it does then it means the xp cant format the drive. if you have more problems then please use the comment below to describe whats being done. After removing Vista, when you reboot your computer, a “No Hard Disk” error may be displayed if your computer has a SATA drive installed. To fix the “No Hard Disk” error, you may need configure your computer’s BIOS settings so that it can recognize the SATA drive installed in you computer. Reconfiguring your BIOS is typically not required if your computer has an ATA/IDE hard drives installed.

Step 1: Activate your computer’s BIOS menu. The first or second screen your computer displays on status may display which key (or keys) you must press to activate your computer’s BIOS menu. You can also look in the index of your computer’s manual for “BIOS” or you can try passing the [Del] or [F1] key when text is first displayed after powering on your computer.

Step 2: BIOS menus vary by computer, but there are seldom more than a few menu categories. Review the “Main” and “Advanced” menu categories to locate your hard drive setting. When you locate the hard drive setting, be sure to note the original drive setting in the bios so that you can restore the original drive setting if your new configuration doesn’t work.

hi there, here's the step by step procedure for reformatting.

1. insert the recovery disk first to your cd rom
2. restart pc and keep on tapping the F12 key
3. once you are prompted for boot options select your cd/dvd rom drive

your computer will now boot up from your cd rom and will initialize the setup.

Well, since the new hard disk is not formatted, and there is nothing currently on it, you will not get a dos prompt or an operating system detected. What you need to do is insert your Windows XP disk, then reboot the machine. When you see the HP screen, tap the F12 key, which will take you to a boot menu. On the boot menu, choose your CD drive, then the computer will boot from the windows disk. From there, just format your disk, and install Windows.

In order to install XP, you will need the following software:
Windows XP SP Installation CD
nLite (http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/nLite.shtml)
Introduction:
If you want to downgrade to XP from Vista you may run into a problem during the boot
stage of XP Installation. The problem I encountered was a message that read:
“Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer”
The problem is that XP does not provide the necessary drivers for the SATA controllers
and as a result it won't detect the SATA hard drive. You could use an external floppy
disk drive but that might not guarantee success.
What has been suggested is that you perform a procedure called "Slipstreaming".
Slipstreaming is the procedure where you create a new build of the XP installation files
and "merge" the drivers you need for the SATA controllers. You would then use this
new build to install XP onto your system.
Note: These procedures were performed on my Toshiba P105 laptop, which is my current
working laptop.
Step 1.
Create a directory under My
Documents where you will
copy the contents of your
XP installation CD.
Step 2.
Download the SATA driver that you will need in order to “Slipstream” into your XP
installation.

When you download the .zip file,

directory where you copied
the XP installation files to.
Click on the Next button.

In the Task Selection, you will click on
the button called Drivers and Bootable
ISO. After you click on each button the
red dot will turn green. What this means
is that you will “integrate” drivers into

folder option to select the drivers that
you will integrate.
Locate the folder where you
unzipped the SATA drivers.
