Just upgraded my network and want to use the old westell 327w just as a wireless access point. Can I hook into the ethernet ports and forget the modem side?
Yes, you can try to set up your network as follows:
The only problem I can see here is that your first router - now in charge of security - does not see your wireless clients as wireless, because they connect via an Ethernet port. Because the second router is connected via a LAN port, it is not using the router functions (DHCP, security, etc.) That might be ok with you - I'm just pointing it out.
If this doesn't work for you, just come back here, leave a comment and we take it from there.
Good luck and thanks for rating!
Hi - I have the exact needs of the poster above and your instructions work great up to a point. I have a wired connection to the AP and I can get internet access with no problem. I can connect to the AP via WiFi and get an IP from the Primary router - I jut can't access the internet from the wireless devices. Any ideas?
Can you ping anything when you are connected? Might be an DNS issue. Open a command prompt (Win+R), type "cmd" and in the opening window type "ping 8..8.8.8" (that's Google's DNS server.) Let me know if you get a reply.
