No picture in record mode, only broad band of light

Camera (Canon S1IS) has stopped working in record mode and is now displaying only broad bands of light (what it is seeing of the scene to be recorded). Playback of previously captured pictures is fine. When this problem started to occur, it was when the batteries were wearing down (not sure if this was a factor or not). New batteries have been installed but the problem has not been rectified. Am not sure of the inner workings of the camera so do not know if a recording/capturing component of the camera has burned out or whatever.

I contacted Canon Canada and they said send it in and if the problem is the failed image sensor (CCD) then it would be repaired free of charge. If the problem is something else (which I doubt), then they will advise me of what the cost will be. This is a very responsible and reasonable action by Canon to this problem.

Your assessment of the problem is quite accurate. The image sensor (CCD) is kaput. Here's a link to this well-documented defect. http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

On the Sony DCR-TRV320E video camera I get two wide horizontal bands on playback and the audio is intermitant. What is the cause?

Having used a cleaning tape several times to no effect. I then went to record, to see if the bands appeared in recording mode. They didn't. So I went back to playback mode and the bands had disappeared.

Samsung vp d20 camcorder

MiniDV cameras have two video heads on the rotating drum, which read and write the picture in broad horizontal bands. When one head is not working, normally because it is clogged by dust/dirt/tape residue, you see broad bands of noise across the image occupying exactly half the total image area.......

S1IS canon camera

Hi,

Apparently the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in this Canon digital camera may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all.

To determine if the CCD (image sensor) is working properly, follow these steps:

1. Insert a memory card with known good images on it into the camera.

2. Power the camera on to the Playback mode.

3. Press the DISPLAY (DISP) button to enable the LCD panel, and observe
the LCD.

a. If the images are displayed properly, please proceed to step
four.

b. If the images are not displayed, or a "NO IMAGES" message
appears, please ensure that the memory card contains known good images.

c. If the card contains known good images, and the issue persists
with a second memory card, the camera will require service.

4. Switch the camera to the Camera mode. You may use any shooting mode
(i.e. Auto, Manual).

5. Press the DISPLAY (DISP) button to enable the LCD panel.

6. Point the camera at a well-lit scene and observe the LCD and/or
viewfinder. If the scene the camera is pointed at appears on the LCD
and/or viewfinder, the CCD is operating properly. If the LCD and/or
viewfinder remain black, the camera requires service.

Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will
repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned
malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.

Regards.

Try setting your camera to mass storage instead ptp.
Reinstall the software of canon. Also see if the camera is in transfer mode rather in shooting mode.
Check if your card is accidently locked somehow.
Always try to load original driver cd and software that came with the camera.

Nikon coolpix horizontal banding

It's quite likely a manufacturer error which Nikon will fix for free. Go to http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html
I just got mine back - took about five weeks because they were out of stock on the CCD (Charge Coupled Device) that they had to replace. Don't give up on the camera. It's worth having it repaired since all it will cost you is to send it to them. Have had the camera four years and it's been to Europe and the Caribbean with us.
