Startup chime on my mac powerbook g4 stopped working. please help !

The parameter ram reset will reset that and other basics back to factory without losing any data. To do this, take a moment and find the command, option, p and r keys and figure out how you are going to hold them ALL down at together. The mac should be off, if not, shut it down (not restart-shutdown). Now, touch the power button and immediately hold down the cmd-option-p-r keys. Hold them for the screen to cycle black to gray THREE times (each taking about 15 seconds), then let go and let the mac complete the boot cycle. On the second cycle, you should have already heard the "chime" appear. That's it! Good Luck.

Reset button on a powerbook g4

The Powerbook G4 power button functions like a reset button if you hold the power button in for a few seconds until the computer powers down.
  1. Hold the power button in for a few seconds (until you see the screen turn off/go black and hear the fans & hard drive stop spinning).
  2. Press the power button again to turn your computer on.
  3. If you have more trouble, you may need to boot in Safe Mode or "perform a Safe Boot":
Press and hold down the "Shift" key immediately after you hear the start-up tone. Release the "Shift" key when the gray Apple icon appears on the screen.

My powerbook g4 is not starting. it opens the gray screen and just says i need to restart the computer. i tried restarting it and removing the battery a bunch of time and nothing is happening. HELP!!!

I am going to have you take your Mac into Safe Mode to see if we can't remove a possible folder(s) that may be affecting your Mac's start up function.

Try these steps:

-SAFE BOOT MODE-
• Reboot your Mac
• Upon restarting your Mac, press the Shift key.
• Hold the Shift key until you see a White Screen with Gray Apple icon and eventually a spinning gear.
• When you see the Spinning gear, release the Shift key.
• Allow the Powerbook G4 to continue booting up. Also this may take a little while
(NOTE: this may take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes to load to the Safe mode screen depending on the performance of your Mac, but if it exceeds this time, shutdown your Powerbook G4 and try just once more. It may have just frozen up the first time around for you.)

• You are going to enter the Safe Mode (which looks like your main desktop environment - the only difference is certain start up items are disabled.)

• Once within the Desktop in Safe Mode
• From the Finder Menu, click Go> Go to Folder
• Type in this line: /System/Library/StartupItems
• This path, is going to take you to the System Library folder which has all of your Mac OS X Startupitems.
• Remove all of those folders to the Trash.

*Reboot your Mac normally and see if you can access your normal User desktop environment.

At times this procedure does help for gray screen issues so give this a try and let me know if this helps.

Thanks!

HELP!!! I am trying to start my Powerbook G4 but as soon as it turns on I just get a grey screen that says that i need to restart my computer. i tried restarting it like 10 times. what else can i do?

Also, check your RAM bay port to see if one of the RAM boards came dislodged and is not inserted correctly. Could also be one of your RAM boards is not compatible or one of the RAM boards is defective.

Powerbook G4 blue screen on start up

Basically some causes of blue screen is the RAM check the RAM remove first maybe it is clogged by the dust. Remove the dust of the memory stick and insert it back to you computer. Usually of you have this problem again you need a recovery disk. Load a windows CD to your CD drive you need to boot and repair the windows.

My powerbook G4 will not startup... All that appears on the screen when I try to turn on my computer is a tiny folder with a question mark on it. The mouse pad is nonresponsive.

Computer cannot find operating system files. Start up from Install Disk or Utility disk and re-install system. Hold down C key while starting from disk.

Mac Powerbook G4 won't (completley) start and won't turn off

All you need to do is a System Repair. You have to boot the Mac with the CD/DVD (as if you were to install the OS X again, but when you get the desktop, you are given options to repair your current installation. (Follow the instructions on screen). It will take about 20 minutes to complete (depending on your processor speed).

Powerbook g4 going to white screen only!!

Do you have any external harddrive attached to it? If so, remove it before restarting. Try to start it up in safe mode by holding the Shift button down at startup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
