I am getting a hardware error message that reads; "hardware error 0502" How can I fix it and can I fix it.

Push encoder strip down and then back up to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.Because my printer the carteage was slaming up against the printer and I did this and hardware 0502 went away. I called the techs they told me to shake it.That didn't fix it.

I am getting a hardware error message that reads; "hardware error 0502" How can I fix it and can I fix it?? I've gone to the Dell site and did what they advised, and I thought it had worked as it was printing just great. Suddenly it stopped and gave me the same error message. I have been using this printer for several years with absolutely no problem until last night. Please let me know if you get new information. Thank you very much.

unpluged and pluged back in now printer is printing far to one side of paper
There was a paper jam (about 8 pages). Apparently they were jammed against ink cartridge. I finally removed papers, but when turned on printer the ink cartridge slammed back & forth once. Error msg: Hardware Error 0502. My service and warranty just expired 4/20/08. Went through Dell's forum and found out it is the "encoder strip". Don't know how to fix. HELP PLEASE!!!! Thank you !!
