Our Bosch 125HX LP water heater used to work fine. Now the water out is luke warm. The pilot lights, the burners come on, but the flame is only about 3/4" high. I replaced the rod assembly in the water valve (we have very hard water), but to no avail. Any suggestions?

First thing I would do is clean and rebuild the watervalve. The watervalve on this heater mandates everything. This watervalve has a maintenance schedule in the manual. She be rebuilt every 3 years. Also sounds like the diaphram in the watervalve may be damaged.

Thermo coupler may be defective. it controls the main gas valve by closing main if pilot is out. make sure thermo coupler bulb is positioned over and near tip of pilot flame, but not in the flame. Thermo couplers are inexpensive and easy to change out.

a tankleess water heater doen's have a piliot? but check the vent outside make sure nothing is blocking it, if it detects the exhaust thru the cold air intake it will shut off and over heat, other then that it would have to be the control board

the pilot is getting too much air and is an indicaiot of dirty or air/ fuel ratio imbalance. The pilot is wimpy and the thermocoupler has alot to do with the gas . Make sure your thermocoupler is on the tip of the flame. You may end up replacing it. because it is showing signs of eminnt failure. When it fals your curners won't fire up. Good luck.

After rebuilding the water valve, because it has been a few years and we have *seriously* hard water here, I couldn't think what it would be short of a gas supply issue, which is out of my league.
Sure enough, the gas regulator was bad, resulting in low gas pressure house-wide.
Thanks to all for your thoughts on the issue.
