Lexmark X7170 will not print in grayscale

I have a Lexmark X7170 with only a black ink cartridge in it. The printer recognizes the color cartridge is missing, yet continues to print as if there were a color cartridge (only prints black, no gray). In the preferences section, the option to 'print color images in black and white' is grayed out and cannot be selected. I recently uninstalled and re-installed the printer and updated drivers, and I never had this issue prior to doing so. What can I do to get a few shades of gray?

SOURCE: no color printing with lexmark x4270

Actually your printhead on the cartridges is probably clogged. I usually take the cartridges out, wet a paper towel and put in a dish and put in microwave for 20 seconds, then put the cartridge printhead on the paper towel for 10 seconds, and then blot with a dry towel. You should see the various colors in the color and black cartridges. Do it several times until ink in freely flowing. Put back in printer and run a clean cycle and try printing normaly. Replaced new ink keeps saying right cartrige is incorrect wont let me print. the cartrige is correct i paid $50.00 for a two pack of black and color ink!!!

Wiping the nozzles with a moistened soft cloth or removing and reinserting the cartridges usually helps. The cartridges for the Lexmark X7170 are black: 32/34 and color: 33/35. If these are the cartridges that you purchased and even tried your old and new cartridges yet the problem persists, please don't hesitate to contact Lexmark technical support.

I want to use black ink only and stop wasting color ink

Hi,
Go to Control Panel->Printers. Then right click on your printer and select printing preferences. There you will see an option like Print in Grayscale or Black and White only.
However, please note that some printers although they are set to print in grayscale they also use the color cartridge and some even don't allow you to print in grayscale if the color cartridge is empty. Why is that? Manufacturer's way of charging you more money.

In the printing preferences you need to select Black and white.

1. open the document you want to print
2. click file
3. click print
4. select printer from list, then click on preferences
5. look around the pages.

In Color tab I found a print in Grayscale - this setting will print the document in black and white colors, the pages may be diffrent on diffrent printers. look for black and white setting or Grayscale.

I just installed a Lexmark 2500. It came with an ink cartridge (color) I purchased a black cartridge and installed it but it does not seem to be working. How do you darken the ink on this printer. It seems...

start
control panel
printer and fax
right click your printer, choose properties
go tab by tab and look for print quality and then try
something like this
choose econo mode, or ink saving mode to start.

try to print in grayscale mode and use only the black ink cartridge.

that should be your new default, and you don~t have to change it from winthin other programs

Mono color

These models use a "3 colour" printing process. In other words, these printers do not contain black ink when the BC-05 colour cartridge is installed. To produce black print, a 3 colour printer mixes an equal amount of the three primary colours. This process is known as "composite" black.

As the ink in the cartridge runs out, one of the three primary colours will run out first, depending on the material that has been printed. After one of the three colours has depleted, this colour will be missing from the mixture required to print black, and the print will change colour. This is the indication that the cartridge needs to be replaced. Usually the remaining colours in the cartridge will run out soon afterwards.

Message wrong cartridge on lexmark 7170 printer

for Lexmark x7170 ink cartridge is #32 and #33.
double check the number on the ink cartridge. and make sure to take the tape off the bottom of th eink cartridge before insert it in the cradle.
as far as the cleaning. there are contact pins in the ink cradle and on the bottom of the ink cartridge.
clean them using a coffee filter with little alcohol.

X5470 Lexmark printer

Lexmark and Dell use a sensor in the cartridge to sense a low ink level. Once the sensor has been activated, you cannot reset it. The printer should work fine except for the fact that you'll have to override the "low ink" message on your computer.

Manufacurers don't make money on printer hardware. All the money is made from ink replacement, so they make it as difficult as possible to use anything other than the stuff you buy from them. Some (HP) put in chips for an "expiration" of the ink/toner. Go beyond the expiration date, the thing won't work.
