My laptop turns off at random times. Now More frequently. The fan and vents are ok, free of dust. i just don't understand whats causing it. Usually when i turn it on, and log on everything seems fine. Sometimes it would stay on for about 30 min. Other times it just shuts off right away. As if i just unpluged it. No error message, nothing. when i try to restart it right away, i press the power button, and it just flashes and shuts off again. i have to wait a few seconds to turn it on.
Ive had the laptop for about 2 years now and its been doing it for about 2 months now. At first not as much. i'd say barley once a week, now its everyday. i cleaned it very well. Causes for this problem can be any of the following:
1- CPU gets overheated. solution: clean dust from fan and heatsink assembly and donot forget to replace the heatsink compound, this is very important.
2- Memory problems. solution: use a program called MEMTEST86+ from the site http://www.memtest.org/ . It is a free and great program.
3-Power problem. By time the capacitors of the power supply gets dried. Causing them to not be able to fulfill power demands. solution: try working with power supply without battery. As the power supply has to run computer and charge battery. We reduce the load. If everything is fine. repair power supply by replacing deffective capacitor.
4-Battery problem. Try operation without battery.
5-Dried solders on motherboard or a component problem on the motherboard. Solution: no solution except replacing motherboard.

I've had the same problem, but it escalated to the extent that I even can't get the computer running. After about 50 seconds from start (it begins normally) it will just shut off immediately.
I have discovered that with the AC adapter connected and teh computer Off, I can hear a silent "click" sound every 50 seconds. If I wait 30 seconds after such a click, and then try to start up the computer it will shut off after 20 seconds.
I can only suppose that it's something wrong with the power management circuits on teh motherboard.

Your computer is doing the same thing like when you press and hold power button? Same problem here. I don't know what seems to be the problem, maybe bad power switch or something.
Go to Control Panel/Power Options/Advanced and set your computer to ask you what do you want to do when you press the power button.
Next time, just before your computer turns off by itself, it WILL ask 'What do you want to do'?

Make sure that when you use your laptop, the vent and fan on the bottom is not blocked by anything. If you block the fan or the vent become clogged, the unit will overheat on turn itself off. Vacuum the fan and vents openings from time to time to prevent dust, dirt and or hair buildup. I hope that helps. Its never easy.

If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make sure the vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed air to do this.

i don't think there's anything wrong there...all laptop fans switch themselves on and off depending on the situation. the fans are normally off but when the temperature rises they turn on to cool off the laptops.
If you are using the ac adapter and your laptop still turns off frequently, you're probably having a problem with "overheating".
If you notice that the unit gets hot, or the vents are not blowing out air as normal before it turns off, surely you need to either clean the fan or replace it.
Accumulated dust in the fan will affect its performance which can cause overheating. Though the unit will not get too hot, the laptop will turn itself off to protect itself from further damage. Use a canned air to blow out dust from the fan.
If this will not work, I suggest to take the laptop to a repair shop for further diagnostic.

It is very hard to tell when the processor is overheating. The laptop may not feel hot at all. If it is an overheating problem, there could be two different causes. One, the fan may be failing or completely failed. Two, there could be dust buildup on the heatsink which you would not be able to see by looking in the vents. The laptop would need to be disassembled to check the heatsink for the buildup. An easy way to check to see if the fan is working is to turn the computer on, let it run for just a few minutes and if the fan is not blowing hard enough for you to feel it with your hand, try holding the vents up near your face to see if you can feel any air flow.
You probably have a faulty fan and or blocked vents with dust.
Check the fan and make sure it spins freely and turns on. If the fan is faulty, replace it.
Clean the vents and fan odf dust.

My problem is coming closer to a solution. After taking out the battery, I can start the computer, and it seems to keep running without problems!
Is it likely that the battery is causing the problem, or is it more likely that the problem is to be found on the motherboard?
