Hi, you will have to perform a fresh install, unless you chose the NTFS file system while installing Ubuntu. Follow these steps:

0. ...BACK UP IMPORTANT FILES...
1. Have your windows installation media handy, either on a disc or USB, you can also use factory reset on your laptop but only if you did not format your recovery partition.
2. Insert your media and reboot your computer
3. Press any key when prompted to run setup
4. If you don't see the prompt, restart your computer and press F12 to select boot options. Choose your Optical Drive or USB.
4b. Alternatively you can just change your media boot order from the Bios setup.
5. Let windows setup guide you through the install process. Format disk partitions if necessary.
6. Windows setup will run its course, it may restart your computer a few times, which is okay.
7. Once setup completes you will automatically boot into windows to complete activation and set-up user accounts.

Thanks, All the best

Sata Hard drive errors and Raid errors

See this answer

Reboot your system and hit F2 as soon as you see the Dell startup screen (the options are F2 for setup, F12 for boot sequence).

In the System Setup screen, do these steps.

Select Drives:
Make sure your Diskette Drive (3.5 floppy) is set properly (Usually set to Internal)
Make sure that "Drive 0: SATA-0" drive is set to "ON"

Go to "SATA Operation":

Your system proabaly came set to "RAID Autodetect / AHCI" - THIS SETTING CAUSES YOUR SYSTEM TO GO INTO AN IDE LOOP AND DOESN'T ALLOW IT TO FIND YOUR FACTORY INSTALLED SATA DRIVE.

CHANGE THE SATA OPERATION SETTING TO "COMBINATION"

Reboot - make sure that the boot sequence is set to CD rom before HD and make sure that the reinstall CD is in the drive. Setup will load, hit enter to reinstall XP. Your HD should now be detected and you should see the licensing agreement.

If you have your files backed up I reccommend deleting the partition and reformatting prior to installing XP, it will give you that option after the license agreement.

Once you have successfully reinstalled the OS, Dell reccommends that you change the SATA Operation setting back to RAID AUTODETECT / AHCI (or back to whatever your factory setting was) to avoid any problems with other IDE devices installed on your system.

Will ubuntu work on evga 780i with raid 0 ?

That's an odd question, but Ubuntu will tolerate that fine. Check out the liner notes that come with your selected version and stepping of Ubuntu. Not valid in Puerto Rico during Jubilee. Do not tease Ubuntu. If rashes or stomach discomfort persist, stop using Ubuntu until you change pants, eat something and take a shower.

In bios make sure the raid chipset is active. Ususally there's 2 one needs drivers one doesn't. I use the one that doesn't then in bios there should be a way to set up your array. Raid 0 is striping mode so you should only see one hard drive, the d drive should be the cd/dvd device. If this is right then you did it right. If it were raid 1 then you would see both hard drives, because one is mirroring the main drive for backup.

Gurb hangs after installing ubuntu on raid 0. I left a 500 Mb /Boot (marked as bootable), 1,7 Gb swap on each disk and /root and /home partitions on raid 0 disks each. Installation gave me no problems but...

Hi,
I too upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 9.10 using wubi, the Windows ubuntu installer. Everything was fine, and I even admired the beautiful desktop, added KDE. I was very impressed until came the time to reboot. Grub hung. I entered the console and tried to repair: To no avail.
I reinstalled Ubuntu/Gnome without installing KDE. All went fine until the time to reboot. It hung again. After several trials, I decided to go back to Ubuntu 9.04.

From what I could gather on the Internet, it has to do with the new type of file system ext4. If only I had the choice to use it or not.

Since I was using wubi and was not offered the choice to install the ext4 file system, I do not know whether that choice is offered on a full scale installation without wubi. You might try to find out if you can customize the installation process and not select the ext4 file system, if possible.

One remark concerning the amount of swap space you are setting aside. In my opinion that's too much: I have a 2GB RAM, about 300MB swap space, and each time I monitor swap usage I find it very low to nil.

Concerning Ubuntu 9.10, I will wait until the bug(?) is fixed before upgrading. Good luck to you

I hope it helps
Thank you for using FixYa.

Installing ubuntu on Raid 0

Ok I have Duo booted ubuntu a couple of times now. When you were partitioning did you use the automatic or he manual? Since you have two hard disks, I will assume you use a desktop and you know how to take it apart. So, if you did automatics the bestt I can tell you is to swith your hard drives around physically and if that fails try switching g the boot menu order. If you used manual partitioning then when you were creating the ext3 partition you did not type / in the text box labeled Moint Point (that's the best I can help you) I hope this has fixed your problem. Ubuntu RAID

You must use the Ubuntu Alternate install disc to install to a RAID system. This is a text mode installer which is similar to the standard graphical installer but uses only the keyboard for navigation. You should read more about the alternate install method and raid in general before you take the Ubuntu raid plunge.

Here's a good article: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=408461
