Riding mower dies when releasing brake

Mrfixit, i'm not sure what safety switch you're talking about Craftsman Model# 917272670 LT 1000 lawn tractor dies after releasing the clutch. It will run as long as the clutch is depressed, and will even remain running if the parking brake is engaged. The engine dies if the clutch is released, or the blades are engaged. I checked the seat safety switch, even bypassing the push button by inserting a wire to continue the
circuit...same thing happens. I have heard of a clutch/brake switch to check, but have no idea where it is. Any assistance is appreciated.

The seat switch is the problem. the switch itself could be bad, but usually theproblem is that the connector is just not plugged in all the way [by the way, trying to bypass the switch by inserting the wire doesn't work because there is a "switch" inside the connector to prevent you from doing just what you did]

Check around the deck lift arm. Usually under the frame but somewhere near the deck lift arm. That is the switch that is directly related to the clutch release as well as the seat switch.
Good luck.

I have a craftsman 917.287030 and it will not stay running. i put it in gear and it stalls. any ideas??

Check the seat safety switch. For example, start the mower and then engage the blades. If the seat safety switch is faulty, then it will die. Same thing with putting it in gear and releasing the brake.

I hope this is helpful for you.

Craftsman lt 1000 dies when i try to engage the mower deck

Hello,

Check the seat switch. If it is out of alignment/loose, the machine logic thinks that the operator is not present (on the seat), and will die.

Best regards, --W/D--

I have a LT 1000 that dies unless the clutch is pushed in. This takes place in all gears including neutral.

there is a safety switch that is hooked too the clutch pedal.change that and you should be all set.

Problem still exist, engine dies when brake relesases, blade engage, unplug safety switch under the seat

Switch under seat needs to be plugged in and make sure the pto lever for the blades is depressing the safety switch. If you are sitting on seat and seat switch is plugged in properly and it cuts off when brake is released then it is seat switch. It is about a $10.00 part; no big deal to replace.

Engine dies as soon as brake releases anf if the blade enage engine dies too,did tune up and overhaul carburetor ,

sounds like you may have a problem with the safety switch under the seat. unplug the switch and try it if it works then replace the switch.

Tractor starts then dies when brake is released

It is most likely one of the safety switches on the tractor like the one under the seat or the one on the clutch/brake.

Tractor starts, stalls when blade is engaged, or brake released

you have a safety switch malfunctioning or a transistorized relay not working properly. Go to www.partsdirect.com, this is sears website. It should be able to find and illustrated parts list for your mower.
