#1739 answering machine hooked up but keeps asking for "password"

We have a Panasonic phone system with an answering machine within the unit.  The answering machine went out so I picked up an AT&T #1739 answering machine, hooked it up, called it and once it rings 6 times a voice comes on and asks for you to enter a password??  You never hear the greeting and cannot leave a message.  Would this be the machine, my Panasonic base unit or my telephone provider?  HELP!

The unit appears to be stuck in "message retrieval mode) and is asking for your password to give you access when you call in(remote answering). You need to return the unit to it's factory default settings. If you don't still have the instructions you can get them here:http://telephones.att.com/docMgt/public/art/309494/1739_manual.pt2.pdf. Hope this helps!

I am trying to hook up my digital answering system with a multi line phone. I need step by step what I need to do. Thanks Ivy Hutchison

The answering machine would plug into the telephone jack on the wall, and the telephone would plug into the jack on the rear of the answering machine.
Now you do mention that the telephones are multi-line units. This could complicate things a bit because the 1739 is a single line answering machine.

If the telephone does not have individual jacks for each line (a jack for line 1 and another jack for line 2) you would need to purchase an adapter (maybe 2 of them...depending on the wall jack) that takes a 2 telephone lines and splits them into 2 individual jacks.

For example:

http://www.tti.net/computer-telephony/phone-accessories.html

After the lines have been broken out, you can connect the answering machine to the line that needs it. You would then either plug the lines into their respective jacks on the wall, or use a 2nd splitter to combine the 2 lines back at the wall jack.

I just got the AT&T Digital Answering system 1739. Is there a way to mute the volume? Would like to be able to mute the volume so if we have company and chose not to answer the phone, our company...

You can't mute the volume with a single button like on a TV. All you can do is turn the volume down with the control on the unit. (Then, of course, you have to remember to turn it back up!) You can get the manual here if you need a copy.
