Accidentally left fridge door open for an extended period of time 6 weeks ago (Kitcenaid side by side). noticed frost buildup afew weeks back (freezer), and having to adjust temp down in fridge when it once kept everything very cold. I emptied the fridge and freezer, and inspected everything. I found ice buildup behind a louver panel between the fridge/freezer cabinets. thawed it away and defrosted freezer (removed panels to inspect interior coils for ice). Left it open for 4 hours. Put it back together, and same condition exists. I can read freezer at 20 degrees, and 60 degrees in fridge. Sidenote, air comping into fridge in top does not move unless freezer door is cracked open. I can't find any obstructions. and all door seals seem fine. What am I missing?
As far as your freezer frosting up, sounds like a door seal problem, run your fingers along the seam of the door seal, there should be no splits/holes in the seal.
As far as the refrigerator either there is a secondary fan motor, or there is a obstruction blocking the air movement, if the freezer has a bad seal, its suspect ice is still building up.

Hi,
There are a few reasons why the refrigerator part will not cool...here are a couple of tips that will help you to figure out why the refrigerantor is not cooling...

frost on the coils means the compressor is working and it is making "cold" if the cold isn't getting to the fridge side the fan the brings the cold air to the fridge side is ethier blocked off or not working. If you have a small thermomator use it to check the fridge side apx 38 to 40 degrees is the "food zone". the fan is usually not to expensive and often not that hard to change. there is a timer that defrosts the coils usually about once every 24 You may see a small knob on the defrost timer. watch its position over several hours and you should see it move position. if it doesn't move then the defrost timer is faulty. the most expensive part of the system is the compressor and it sounds like that part of your system still functions. If the freezer is getting plenty cold but the fridge part is not cooling off you have an air flow problem. It is not uncommon for these fans to make noise and then fail altogether.
