The cord to my Poulin chainsaw is sticking

It seems to get caught on something and it is impossible to get a good smooth pull which is required to get it to start...it almost jerks my arm out of it's socket when the cord suddently stops feeding...I have had it returned to the store and they said that it had been fixed...nothing has changed. It still takes "hours" to start it and by that time I've given up.

After getting it started I noticed that the cord was half way sticking out. I turned the chainsaw off and tried getting it started again , hoping this time it would feed back into the housing. I couldn't get it started period then because the cord is now 2/3 's out. I took off the 4 screws and tried looking at how i could tighten it but even after i did It slowly loosens. Anyone find a way to keep this from happening? Seems the springs and plastic parts in this housing are cheap and preventing me from properly storing the cord while working.

Does the rope just stop or does it kick back?
If it kicks back it is a timing issue. The flywheel of flywheel key have sheared. Not a very common problem but it does happen.

had same problem with recoil. Slightly loosened screw that holds it fixed that problem now if i could just pull it without it being hard as heck to pull!

Your problem sounds like a broken starter spring. If the spring is broken it will slip allowing the tension to be released and not fully retract the rope.

My Toro mower won't start. The cord will not allow me to pull it out all the way. It seems to be caught on something.

Disassemble the starting mechanism and remove the snag in the line that is preventing you from pulling cord all the way out. Till you do that, you will be pounding salt.

Why is my 14 &20 chainsaw Model 8901/8902 having difficulty pulling cord. It seems to lock. What could be the problem?

if it runs ok after you get it started it could be the starter pulley. the blue max saws have that problem

I purchased a 14" &20" chainsaw Model 8901/8902 and I am having difficulty pulling cord. It seems to lock. What could be the problem?

That is a good and bad sign. When a motor wears out and looses compression it gets very easy to pull. New motors should pull hard and be choppy or seem to "lock" however - you *MUST* carefully review your fuel mixture to ensure you are adding enough oil to the mix - if you used straight gas without adding oil you will burn the motor up and experience difficult pulling. Simple test - remove the spark plug - give it a good pull it should be liquid smooth with no binding anywhere on the pull. Report your results.

I tried to start my older Poulan Chain saw a day after I had been using it. I find it almost impossible to pull the starter cord...there is too much resistance. If I take out the plug and pull the cord...

Did you remember to mix oil with the fuel before you put in the tank?

Remove the spark plug wire and the spark plug. Remove the muffler. Shine a light through the spark plug hole and inspect the cylinder through the hole where the muffler was. Is it smooth and shiny? Use the starter to move the piston up and down slowly. Is it smooth or does it appear scratched and gouged?

I suspect parts of your piston are adhered to the cylinder wall. If that is true it will probably cost more to repair it than to replace it.

You needn't take it to a poulan repair center. Most Stihl outlets employ good mechanics and can repair any saw. HTH

Shh... my Husqvarna gets serviced by a Stihl dealer... The Husqvarna dealer is actually closer to me. I feel better about the Stihl mechs.

Won't turn over

RESET THE GUARD AT YOUR LEFT HAND. THERE IS A GUARD AT THE TOP OF THE HANDLE THAT KICKS WHEN THE CHAIN COMES OFF.THAT SHOULD DO IT. GOOD LUCK.

Poulan 16" cannot start...pull cord locked up

Remove the cover, should be 4 screws that holds it on once the 4 screws are loosened the rope could rewind on its own. If not check to make sure the spring is not broken.

My Poulan chain saw has a sticking pull cord....r

Check the flywheel and flywheel key. It sounds like the timing is off.

Chainsaw pull cord won't pull to start

Simply check to see if motor is locked is to remove spark plug and try to pull start. If motor turns, then he may have gotten gas in cylinder and created hydraulic lock. If moto does not turn, it is just a few screws more to take side cover off and see if rope caught in pully. In fact, you may want to take side cover off first, and make sure rope pulls out of housing, and self winds, like it should. At hat point, he can simple turn flywheel by hand to see if motor is locked up.

If the motor is locked up, you can put small amount of motor oil, (half a tea spoon) into spark plug hole, let it sit half an hour or so, and then try to work the flywheel back and forth to break it free. This condition may have been caused by running straight gas, not mixed. And, even if motor frees up, it may still need to go in for repair.

We have a couple of Poulin Pros at this saw mill where I work, and have had the piston lock up more than once, from guys dumping in straight gas. Sometimes we'ra able to free up piston, and make saw run again. And sometimes we end up tearing it down and repairing piston ring. Good Luck
