Threads stripped on tripod connector can they be repaired

Hi Winterhawk.

I think you'll find all camera tripod mount stuff is termed 1/4-20. That's 0.25 inches diameter, 20 threads per inch.

Obviously you want to make your bolt short so you don't crack the camera case, strip the bolt, or otherwise get into trouble.

The threads cannot be replaced by the end user. Because the cameras are mounted at all sort of angles and can have very heavy loads placed on the tripod mount, they are usually built in under the body shell, or actually into the body shell. In order to repair this, send it to the manufacturer and they will provide you with a quote. An alternative option would be to take it to a local camera store, however it may be difficult to find one that can repair a Sony DSLR.

replace battery is the only way to fix it

I have the same problem and came across this solution http://www.birdforum.net/archive/index.php/t-33708.html, basically tapping and replacing the threads with a stronger steel insert. Haven't tried it myself yet but plan to.

I got an estimate of $125 to fix the Coolpix 7900 door, and the camera probably isn't worth that much. So I looked more closely at the camera to create a jury rig fix. As I never use a tripod with the camera, I thought about using the threaded tripod mount. I found a very short 1/4 inch thread screw in my garage and cut a thin metal strip to about 2 1/4" x 1/2". I then drilled a 1/4" hole at one end of the strip, laid the strip across the door and tightened the screw through the 1/4" hole and into the tripod mount. The door is now secure. To remove the battery, I simply loosen the screw a little with a dime and pivot the metal strip out of the way. There are many variations that can be done similarly such as using a plastic strip and a plastic 1/4" bolt or even a shorter strip that just covers the door.

Try thick aluminium foil to around the thread of the tripod pack out the socket

Hardware stores should have thumb screws in different sizes and thread lengths ... box stores , local hardware ....

On the bottom of your camera there will be a threaded metal socket. It should look silver in color and appear like the inside of a hardware nut -- threads that a bolt can screw into.

On the top of the tripod is a threaded bolt that fits into the socket on the bottom of the camera. Place the bolt gently into the socket, align it with the camera and gently turn it to the right (righty-tighty) to engage. Be careful not to strip the threads by tightening without aligning the bolt and the camera.

You should tighten it to where it is snug but don't force it.

I have no ideas, but if you buy another tripod, I owuld like to buy your old handles from your 8500.
