I had this exact same problem. After a difficult removal of the ice bucket (admittedly a lot of yanking against frozen ice cubes before I decided to chisel them out from above), I could no longer seat the ice bucket back onto the hexagonal auger drive shaft. When activating the ice dispenser, I could hear the motor turning, but the auger shaft itself would not rotate. The cause was that the auger shaft had moved upward through its stop grommet during all of the yanking to remove the ice bucket.

Take off the two hex screws holding the top plate around the auger shaft. The shaft is then easily removable and you can inspect it for slippage against the stop grommet. In the attached photo, you can see there is about 1/2 inch of clean auger shaft visible above the grommet, where the shaft has slid upward relative to the grommet. If this is the case, the fix is simple. Turn the shaft upside down and lightly tap the grommet around the edges with a small hammer until it moves back into place. Upon replacing the auger shaft, you can feel it seat back into the drive motor adapter.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Side by Side Ice Maker Not Making Ice

If you have the type of ice maker that has an ice bin on the freezer door, then there are instructions available at www.AnyoneCanFixIt.com to fix the ice maker problem. They also sell the part that is sometimes required to repair this common problem on the ice maker. The problem is notorious on these refrigerators that were made around 2004 and later. The ice maker will usually go out within 1-2 years. They have redesigned a part to eliminate the problem.

SOURCE: How to replacemale gear for ice auger on 2003 whirlpool side by s

Here is a place that has an exploded view of your icemaker, and mounting: http://www.pcappliancerepair.com/model-display.php
On the left side of the page, scroll that view down until you see the freezer door parts, and click on the words. This will bring up the proper view where you can see where the screws etc are that hold the unit in.

They, as well as the several other places I checked, show the auger motor as a sealed unit, that you get to by removing the icemaker from the door.

SOURCE: cubes won't dump into the storage bin

In photo below you can see the heating element that comes on moments before the ice maker drops the ice. If not working then the icemaker will struggle to unload. You need to unplug the refrigerator and then unpluge the ice maker and remove it to test these parts. Test with a multi meter or ohm meter. Test the 2 connections next to the number #26. Hope this helps, Sea Breeze

SOURCE: Ice built up in the freezer compartment

We have a possible defrost problem or the seal around your doors are pulling moist air air inside. I believe now would be a good time to unplug the refrigerator and check the coils and defrost system. Inside the fresh food compartment you have a defrost timer that I want you to turn clockwise slowly until the compressor stops. Leave it there for about 25 minutes until refrigerator either restarts or don't if it does not then turn it a little more until it starts. The part number for the timer is 482493 Also below is a picture and #6 is the defrost timer. It should be reachable through a small hole in the bottom of the control panel. If everythig is well there we will check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. After you check these things let me know the results. Sea Breeze

I CANNOT GET MY ICE BIN BACK IN PLACE IN ORDER TO MAKE MORE ICE I have a whirlpool side by side with ice/water in the door. the buck will not go back in place either i'm missing something or i'm an idiot.

You prob have to turn the gears in the rear of the fridge. Make sure you can get the bin in the tracks it sits in correctly then check to see if the gears on the auger motor line up properly so it can seat properly into the bin. Lmk if you need more help!

Whirlpool side by side ref auger froze up. will not turn.is there a reset button?

The auger motor is not very powerful, so if you have ice build up in the bin, it can hold the auger motor immobile. Suggest you take the ice bin out and completely defrost and dry before putting back in.

Side by side Whirlpool refrigerator indoor ice make does not dispense ice. The freezer door stood ajar for several hours, allowing some of the ice in the storage chest to melt. The dispenser seems to be...

If you haven't already dumped all of the half-melted ice, go ahead and do that. Rinse out the ice bucket and dry it, so the ice doesn't stick together. When you put it back in the freezer, make sure it goes all the way back, so the auger engages with its drive at the back of the unit. If you hear the motor turning but no ice is moving, the auger blades may have sheared from the shaft. I had to replace the auger in my own Whirlpool for that reason. Good luck - I hope this is helpful to you.

Icemaker is making ice but the ice dispenser is not working

Check the ice storage container. The ice dispenser will not dispense ice until the first supply ice has dropped into the ice storage container.Remove excess ice from the back of the ice container. Make sure ice cubes are not jammed between the ice maker and the back of the ice container.

---------------------

The auger won't engage or turn to dispense ice.Remove the ice bucket and with a hair dryer warm up the inside where the fork is that turns the auger in the bucket and try it and if this does not help then you will have to replace the auger motor ,, chances are the motor is just froze up .--------

If there is nothing jammed then try this./Remove the ice bin out.And then clean the ice bin.

Rotate the auger with your hand.If its hard then there is problem with auger motor. If the auger is not rotating fine then its faulty auger motor or the auger motor is frozen,if you notice ice getting collected there.

---------------

Take a hair dryer and blow hot air on the auger motor for few minutes.Take care you dont blow hot air continuously.

But if that is not helping then disconnect auger motor connecting wire wait for 2 minutes clean the connector and reconnect the connector back and see.If that is not helping at all. Then, replace the auger motor.

Whirlpool side by side GD27DQXFW01; ice cubes are not dispensing

We will need to check the voltage at the auger motor while depressing the dispense switch. If all the other features work on the dispenser panel while I would consider checking the voltage going to the motor. Some auger motors are in areas where water causes the voltage to be shorted by constant moisture. We will need to remove the panel and simulate what you have done on the outside but this time we need to see if the voltage has been altered or if the auger motor itself is defective. Sea Breeze

Ice maker will not dispense ice.

ON THE AUGER MOTOR IS A COUPLER THAT SLIDES INTO THE AUGER WHEN THE BIN IS INSTALLED. SOMETIMES, THE COUPLER WILL ROUND OUT THE FLAT SIDE OF THE CENTER HOLE. THIS WILL CAUSE THE MOTOR TO CONTINUE TO TURN, BUT THE COUPLER WILL REMAIN STILL DUE TO THE RESISTANCE OF THE BIN AUGER. ALSO, BE SURE THE ICE IN THE BIN HASN'T MELTED TOGETHER BINDING UP THE AUGER. IF NECESSARY, REMOVE THE ICE AND START OVER WITH FRESH ICE. YOU MAY NEED TO REPLCAE THE COUPLER OR AUGER MOTOR.
