I have been using CapturePerfect 2.0 with my Canon 2080-C scanner for going on 10 years. I had to reinstall the scanner and software on a new computer (drivers are the latest), as my old computer died. The problem is this: on my old installation, when I scanned a small document (for example, a check), the scan would appear as the check on a white background, paper size set to 8.5x11", with the check appearing in the upper-right hand corner of the final scan. Now, when I do the same scan, the check appears on a black background, and if I go to print the scan, it wants to print all that black. I know I can fix the problem by choosing paper size, "Automatic," but then the problem is that for a small document like a check, the scan appears huge. For the life of me I don't know how I scanned a small check with paper size set to 8.5x11" and have the background appear white, because no matter what I do on my new installation, the background appears black. Does anyone have an answer? Thanks so much.
All areas outside of the document will be black only. I don't know how you were getting white background.
If you want white background around your scanned image, a) stick the check (in this example) onto a white paper and scan the whole sheet. Ensure double detection is off. b) You can also do this in software, by cropping a larger area outside the scanned image.
There are many options to view the scanned image like Actual size or Fit or Fit vertically or Fit width. The same image will appear different in each case.

In Captureperfect, select page size as 'Scanners Maximum'. Select automatic paper size, check the output now. If you select bigger paper size and smaller paper, you will see lack output, outside the paper area.

Try uninstalling and reinstall the scanner again. Try on a different computer. If even after this the problem remains, may be the there is some hardware fault (failure of light) in the scanner. How is it in color?

Under CapturePerfect3, you can choose to deskew the scanned image while scanning itself. Also select 'Image only" radio button instead of 'Guide Plate'. The software will remove black borders around the image.
