I have a 1994 40Hp Yamaha 2 stroke. The water pump seems to be ok but it seems that water is not circulating properly. Water is actually coming out around the cowling which seems odd to me. Any other outboard i have ever owned the water may exit around the exhaust and of course the idicator on the side of the cover but not the cowling. Is this normal? I know this engine has a thermostat on it and it does not seem to over heat during operation, i was concerned that someone might have broken the connection to the power head from the water pump and i am just dumping water. After operating for a while water begins to flow out of the indicator from the side of the cover but never a strong stream as i am more accustom to with other engines. at cold and idle little if any water is running out of the side of the cover. Any ideas.

There seems to be an air pocket or no antifreeze in engine block. Try this method disconnect upper radiator hose and pour water directly into hose down into engine block until it full. when its filled reconnect hose and fill up radiator. as the vehicle warms up open bleeder valve on the thermostat housing and release air from system. open slowly and BE VERY CAREFUL WATER WILL BE HOT, bleed until you get a steady stream opening and cosing valve. However if all of this don't work. You may have a bad pump. Good Luck

In most outboards, it will flow through the prop itself (through the inner prop). There should be a stream of water coming from somewhere around the back end of the motor itself, called a telltale, which visually shows that the water pump inside the outboard is pumping water up around the motor. If you cannot see this, then there is obviously a problem with the water pump or pump impeller that needs to be corrected to prevent the outboard overheating.

Hello there:
when you changed out the sensor did you have the codes cleared from the computer brain this is common on outboards. contact your local dealer for further asistance .
best regards mike

it sounds like a possible head gasket problem, you can get the fluctuation from combustion gases getting pumped into your cooling system and creating gas pockets,i would suggest taking it to a shop and have them do a block test to look for combustion in the cooling system to confirm the problem, that way you will know for sure,if it comes up negative they can also perform a flow test to make sure there is no restriction in the cooling system such as a plugged radiator or a bad thermostat, hope this sheds a little light on it
