You're apparently using a lens with an aperture ring. Turn the ring to its smallest aperture (largest f/number). If the ring has a lock, lock it in place. You can control the aperture from the camera body, the same was as with a lens without an aperture ring.
If this is not the case, please specify the lens you have mounted on your camera.
SOURCE: Nikon D50 LCD Display does not work
NatD, The D50 and indeed most SLR digital cameras [ I have a D40 ] does not allow you to take pictures using the LCD display ... this is by design, you are meant to use the viewfinder and the image you see through it is straight through the lens via a mirror block [ called a reflex pentamirror or prism ]. When the mirror is down such that you can see the image in the viewfinder it is obscuring the sensor [ the bit that takes the picture ] and when you take a shot the mirror lifts and the picture is recorded. Its this reason that DSLR's dont use the LCD to shoot, however there are a few now available that do let you do this, such as olympus, new panasonic one and higher end Nikon and Canon cameras. Hope this explains it without getting too detailed!
SOURCE: aperture
You need to set the aperture ring on the lens to the minimum f-stop number, i.e. f22,f32. The camera controls the aperture rather than a mechanical setting on the lens
SOURCE: MY NIKON D50 SCREEN HAS
This screen shows areas of the photo that are overexposed slightly.
It flashes them to help you.
You get to this screen by pressing the up or down arrows when displaying the pictures you have taken.
To change it just press the up arrow when the camera is showing the screen until you get a display without flashing.
Once you have done this the display will be steady.
If you get any other screen in future you may have accidently pressed the arrow again.
Just cycle thru the displays to get back to steady.

The problem may be with the sigma's aperture ring. Try this:
- Turn camera off
- Turn the aperture ring clockwise and lock it
- Turn camera on
If this does not solve the problem, do it again but turn it counter-clockwise
Testimonial: "thanks for the advice camera now back in working order. thanks again."
