Ford 8n Is It Time to Replace the Starter?

I have been through and cleaned all of the wires for possible bad ground. I took the starter apart and saw no visible signs of erosion or damage. When you engage the starter button the solenoid engages but nothing happens with the starter. When you touch the hot cable directly to the starter nothing happens with the starter. Do I need to replace the starter?

SOURCE: my 1949 8N Ford tractor, the starter just spins

My thought is you need a new "bendix" for lack of a better word. The device I speak of spins out and connects with the flywheel. There is the possibility you have electric problems but based on what you say, I think it is mechanical.

I have a tractor like this too. A lot of the problem is the RPM of the Starter shaft. Make sure you have a 6 Volt Armature if you are still running the 6 Volt Battery. There are 2 different Bendix drives, the old style which is the long style and the newer Automotive short style.

To get the shorter Automotive style to fit inside the Bell housing you have to use a Die grinder and make a little room. You may find the Website, Dennis Carpenter.com beneficial. Valu-Bilt is another tractor parts source.

There is a referral to an Improved Ratchet type Starter Drive. You might ask the Re-builder if the part you have is suppose to fit an NAA type tractor. My books show it would be the wrong part if it does. I have read a lot of Parts books and seem to remember some of the Bendix gears were 9 tooth and some were 10 tooth. Your Ring gear is suppose to have 134 teeth.

I believe you are better off testing the Starter before you install it. You may want to check the Starter Draw on a bench at Autozone or Oreillys. The lower the draw, the better the connections are. If you are dealing with a Tractor place, they can certainly bench check the unit.

You may need a stronger Battery with more pop in it Have your Battery load tested too, you may be surprised. When I rebuilt my 8N starter I really did not care for a few plastic components I found inside it. You are going to need to lube up the Bendix good to keep it sliding. You may have a bad starter solenoid. Could maybe be a bad relay also. Check your ground and power wires from your battery to make sure there are no breaks where it could be grounding out. Battery and starter may be good but bad wires won't let it get power to starter.

Wiring a selonoid

http://www.ntractorclub.com/

The link above is just one of a dozen or more very helpful websites for Ford 8n tractors.
The original 8n tractor had a six volt battery with positive ground (this is different than most automobiles that have a negative ground). The starter solenoid is energized via the ignition switch and the large starter button in front of the gear shift, the small wires going to the solenoid energize a coil which "pulls in" and completes a circuit that then provides 6 volts directly to the starter motor through a large, heavy gauge wire. The smaller wires connect to the two terminals on the top of the solenoid and the heavy wire goes to the larger post on the solenoid and originates from the negative post of the battery... Hope this helps. There are many, many schematics and pictures available on the "net" The Ford 8n community is very large and extremely helpful....Good Luck

2006 yamaha grizzly starter wont stop cranking

Possible solutions;
1. starter contacts sticking-take the switch apart and clean the contacts or repalce the swtich.
2. wire to starter button shorting/grounding-look for broken/shorting wire from the starter switch.
3. starter solenoid contacts welded together-replace the solenoid

8N's are positive ground negative run...hence the negative wire to the battery. Try jumping the starter solenoid and see if you have a bad solenoid. A second answer could be in your battery. You have a 6 volt battery so be sure to check the charge on the battery.

Ford 4000 starter only works when I hit it with a hammer. What does that indicate?

the bendix unit on the starter shaft is sticking. You need to pull the starter and clean the shaft up and lightly grease it so the gear can move out when you engage the starter. worst case scenario you may have a badly worn shaft and need to replace it with a new starter. hope this helps you...

Ford 8n won't crank

Hi..my name is Keith..and the 1st things that i would check is to make sure the battery terminals and cables ends are clean..if they are..i would check to make sure the ground wire and where it connects to the frame is clean and rust free..and if they are in great condition....i would suspect the starter solenoid..i'd make sure all the connections are clean on it..and if it still dont work after you cleaned it...i would replace the solenoid..i hope this helps..and there could be other things..so if it dont solve your problem..write me back

Starter on ford 8n tractor will not engage.

Did you check for voltage at the starter connection at the starter connection AFTER the solenoid.......when the solenoid is energized?
Just because it clicks does not mean it is sending power through.
Does the starter have a good clean ground?
Use a battery booster cable and supply your own battery power right to the starter to check it.Try grounding it too with the other battery booster cable. The starter drive is only used when the starter is turning as it is thrown out into the teeth of the flywheel...cranking the engine and back out away from the flywheel when the starter stops turning.

I used to have an 8N. Is it an original 6 volt system or upgraded to a 12 volt system. Not that it matters too much. It is 1 of 2 possibilities. Either the starter button is sticking in or the new starter drive is bad. Is the starter button original on the trans by the shifter? If so, you can install one in the dashboard and re-run the wires.
