Kenmore 80 ser dryer does not spin. The belt is fine and I checked for friction on the rollers and drum. It will spin if I start it with a push. The motor spins smoothly but will not run on its own unless I give it a twist.

Does it sound like the motor is starting? If the belt is good, but the drum won't spin, it sounds like the motor is gone or the drum has seized.

Your problem sounds like drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication.
If you have a front loading machine,

Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer.
Be REAL CAREFUL not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch. Then remove the top of the dryer.
Remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt. Remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm pulley and motor.
Now is a good time to check the belt to see if it has slipped off of the idler arm pulley and also to check the belt condition for wear.
Be sure to note the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt.
Check your drum rollers for flat spots or wear, if they have flat spots or wear on them replace them.
If the drum rollers don't have flat spots or wear on them then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve your noise problem.

I think you need to check your belt and drum rollers.
If you have a front loading machine,

Remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt. Check the condition of the belt and replace it if it is worn or cracked, it may have slipped off of the idler pulley causing drag on the belt.
Remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers. Your drum rollers may be dragging or in need of lubrication.
Check your rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them replace them.
If they don't have flat spots on them, then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the rollers with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. I will include these two websites for parts and further help:

Faulty Blower Wheel
If you hear a great deal of noise coming from the blower area of the dryer when it is running, then the blower wheel could be defective.

The are many different designs for blower wheels and just as many unique failure modes. Vanes (fins) can break off the wheel and bounce around in the blower breaking more pieces. The blower can break around the coupler with the shaft. This can cause the blower to spin loosely on the shaft. The blower can form cracks which cause it to vibrate, etc.

You should also not be surprised to find foreign debris in the blower. The occasional bird, rodent or squirrel has been known to bypass the out vent cover. If they crawl into the exhaust tube the first thing they come into contact with is the blower wheel.

If the blower wheel is not spinning, or if it is missing vanes, it is not moving air efficiently. As a result, heat is not removed from the heat source and it can trip the high limit switch or blow the thermal cut-off.
Worn Belt
A worn belt can stretch and/or become brittle with age. The belt can then slip on the drum or motor to cause squeaking. If this is the case, the solution is to replace the worn belt.

The belt is not the only item that can cause squeaking. It can also be caused by a faulty idler pulley, worn drum bearings, worn drum glides or worn drum rollers depending on brand and style.

When replacing the Belt is is a good idea to also change the Drum Support Rollers, Drum Glides, Idler Pulley and Clips. All of these items are economical easily changeable when replacing the belt. The upside is that your dryer will operate like new.

When they wear, often times they begin to elongate and form a non-round 'cam' shape. The result is that when the dryer is turned on it creates a rumble that sounds as though you are trying to dry a pair of tennis shoes. This sound is usually the drum being forced up and down on the non-round wheels. If the rollers are worn, the solution is to replace them.


When replacing the Drum Rollers it is a good idea to also change the Front Drum Glides, Drum Belt, Idler Pulley and Clips. All of these items are economical and easily changeable when replacing the glides. The upside is that your dryer will operate like new. there are 2 drum rollers at the back of the dryer. shut off power, pull drum and you will see 2 rubber wheels. there is a little plastis triangle that keeps the roller in place. try spinning the rollers . they probably will not spin too freely. remove triangles ,inspect inside of roller the stainless steel bearing may have gunk on it try to clean off . also check shaft roller rides likewise remove any debri use a little rubbing alcohol to remove gunk. also check the idler roller that routes the belt for the same things. good luck

No need for a schematic, there are two kenmore dryer belts, 'full size' or 'apartment size', if it is a belt you will be able to here the motor racing unloaded, turn heat to cold before testing, dont want to blow a thermal fuse.

Kenmore dryer comes apart from the front,

• UNPLUG dryer 220V is not fun
• remove the lint screen
• remove the screws under the lint screen holding the case top to the screen holder
• with a putty knife or other blunt blade release the catches at the front corners of the top and raise top
• remove screws holding front of case on, from inside the dryer
• remove door switch cables
• lift front of case off and set aside,
• can reach motor, belt, felts and rollers.
• broken belt will be obvious, lying on the floor

If belt is broken, examine rollers and felt bearings for wear, stuck rollers or no felt left, is the most common cause of belts breaking, extra tension is required to spin the drum, If damaged replace them, they are cheap and easy to do, and it woud be no fun if another belt broke quickly

reasemble after repair in reverse order.

kenmore dryers are the easiest dryers to work on. unplug! remove 2 screws @lint screen top. insert screrwdriver under top @ each end and pop top up. disconect wires to door panel. remove 2 5/16 screws at each end inside. lift front door panel up and out.( the bottom of the panel is held by spring clips. replace belt if broke. remove drum if not and check rollers. note: belt route at idler pulley.
