While swithcing on the camera the zoom gets extended on its own till full capacity and the zoom buttons does not work.Pressing on the zoom reverse buton afterwards also has no effect and the lens remains in full zoom including digital zoom.
Based on your description, it certainly sounds like the zoom button is stuck or shorted. If you're comfortable with taking it apart, I'd try getting to the zoom electronics and see if there's any noticeable damage. Whenever I try something like this, I like to see how much damage I could cause first. eBay has sold this item for less than $50 with shipping (just in case you break something). You can also look there for parts cameras -- one listed for $10 with free shipping that might give you what you need.

Ive had the same problem with my coolpix 2200. I was taking photos and zoomed in for a close up shot and now when I try to zoom out again the camera doesnt respond, I have to completely shut the camera off so that it automatically pulls the lens in and then switch it back on, but as soon as I use the zoom function it just sticks again. Ive never dropped or banged it so I dont understand how or why its jamming like it does.
