WD Elements 1TB External Hard Drive won't initialize

Hi,

I have a Western Digital Elements 1TB External Hard Drive, however it was interrupted during formatting and is now not working properly. I am told that since the drive was not disconnected from the power there should not be a problem

The drive shows up in my computer but will not open. In disk management (under computer management) the disk shows up as uninitialised. When I try to initialize the disk it says 'The drive cannot find the sector requested'.

The Western Digital Diagnostic tool shows the disk as USB but shows its capacity as 0mb. When I run diagnostics it comes up with the following error code : 11-Cable Test::Read diagnostics sector error!

How can I get the hard drive working again? The data that is stored on it does not matter, I wish to start again.

Thanks a lot

SOURCE: My Computer does not show: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB external USB hard drive

Well i got a simple 320 gb external hard drive, and since the first month i had problems, i solve the recovery issue by opening the hard drive, and find it out, the inside was broken, and it got unplugged. so plugged it back and got my info. if your data its more important than 200dlls or less break the thing open, because if you claim the warranty they are not responsible for your information.

I went through this with my PC but you want it to remaun seperate you must have loaded it to your C drive find the uninstall and unistall it just check on your control panel to see if it is on there . If you are running microsoft you have to run the program that will be listed in microsoft support just check out the Western igital site they will have an ID number and it will give you everything you need

SOURCE: Western Digital WD Passport external hard drive not working!

Hi,

The problem you're having is not at all uncommon. The external drive may simply have been disconnected improperly or may have experience a small power surge while it was writing files.

The files on the drive are most likely still retrievable should you need them. If you already have copies of all of them you can simply reformat the drive and recopy them to it. If you do not have copies, whatever you do, do not format the drive.

Assuming the damage is logical(lost the partition table), your files should be recoverable through a relatively inexpensive data recovery process. Should the drive turn out to actually be failing they are likely still recoverable but this tends to be more expensive.

There are a lot of good companies that can handle this type of recovery. The one I often use for my clients it Armor-IT Data Recovery. Although they have recently gone private(gov't contracts) you can still find them by searching the above on google and they still do private work out of Canada, they just don't advertise anymore.

Hope this helps FixYa
