Often overlooked is tha fact that if you switched to another input, the dvd motor will not spin? Check that first, not switched to another input to the TV or the LCD screen? Otherwise, it is easy to replace the dvd unit.
The first step is to clean the lens of the optics assembly (if you can get to it) carefully using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that does not resolve the problem, try playing a music CD. If the music CD plays but a DVD does not, it suggests that the laser is starting to fail and needs to be replaced. CDs require far less laser power to read than DVDs.
