Dell Jukebox is stuck in Rescue Mode

Back it up to a computer and do a full factory reset. I just read your question tagged onto an old post. You should not be using this device to store important class notes. It is so old it could fail at any time.

Anything unusual happen to the player before the problem started? Dropped it or perhaps unplugged it from pc while synchronising? The most likely fixable problem is a loose connector on the HDD/main board cable, or a failing battery/power adaptor giving the HDD a voltage too low. unfortunately however the HDD on these players is a bit vulnerable to rough treatment. When you connect it to a computer, does it still appear as normal or is it not recognised etc. What operating system PC are you using - perhaps formatting from the PC first before trying to install the firmware will help. Are you using the latest firmware from Dell or are you using a cd that came with the player? Is your player still under warranty or do you want to try and open it up and have a check yourself. The solution to many random problems is to simply reset your Dell DJ. This can be done by using a small, thin object (such as the tip of an ink pen) to press the reset button that is on the bottom-left side of the DJ. -or- Hold down the play/pause button while it's off, insert a paperclip into the reset button, take it out, and then let go of the play/pause. The DJ should open to a rescue mode, then run disc clean-up.

Get a wired lapel microphone and plug it into the microphone input on your Dell. The onboard mic is designed to record all ambient sounds. You want a different product to get the result you're looking for.

It could be that your hard drive is going out, or it could be that you have a virus in your master boot record.

If it's a virus in your master boot record then do the following:

Download The following iso listed below. It is the latest version of the Kaspersky rescue disk. You need to burn it to a CD with a program like Imgburn (Which is also FREE like the iso file). Then you need to boot from the CD and run the scanner. It should fix you right up.

Your operating system or Master Boot Record is corrupt. Which version of windows are you using?

It may be possible to repair the problem with your windows disk. Boot from the Windows disk but make sure you read the instructions for windows repair carefully because some options will format your hard drive.

To rescue the data here are some things I do:
Make a boot disk with USB support and transfer the contents of your drive ton an external harddrive. Or, you could place your hard drive in another computer as a slave drive and retrieve your files that way.

Try going into rescue mode by pressing the Play button while inserting the end of a thin object such as a straightened paper clip into the reset at the same time, then hold the Play button until your Dell Pocket DJ turns on.
Scroll to "clean up" and select. This just defragments your players hard drive, you won't lose any data.
If that doesn't fix it try replacing the firmware. Download the most current firmware from Dell's support website. Scroll to and select "reload firmware" in rescue mode. Connect to pc with usb cable and power on player. Double click the firmware file on your pc and let it do it's thing. This won't affect your saved data either.
If neither of those work you may need to reformat the players hard drive. This will wipe out anything you had on the player. Scroll to and select "format all" while in rescue mode. Select "yes" then just watch the progress bar. Good luck!

If you can boot into the Recovery Mode menu, run the Disk Clean-Up option from there. As long as your drive isn't physically damaged, it should be able to fix your problem.

If the hard drive is mechanically damaged (as it most likely is - the drives used in the Zen Xtra are rather fragile compared with current drives),As for recovering the files from your existing drive then the only possible way to retrieve the data stored on it is to utilize a Data Recovery Service but it will cost you a lot except if still under warranty

The Zen Xtra uses a standard laptop hard drive, so it'll be easy to locate and install a new one - just be sure the new hard drive you install has a current rating equal to or less than the current rating for your existing drive. To remove the hard drive, you'll need to pop off the front cover, remove the battery, and remove the four broad-head screws that retain the hard drive in place. Then carefully pry the top end of the hard drive out, and pull it away from the case, pulling from the top end.
When you install the new hard drive, you will need to re-install the firmware.

VR mode or Video Recording mode is a feature on stand-alone consumer and computer DVD recorders that allows video recording and editing on a DVD rewriteable disc.
In VR mode, users can create and rename titles for the scenes. Also, if a scene is deleted, the space allocated by it will be utilized later without the need of reformatting a disc.
If the user would like to record on the same disc again in later time, on VR mode, users may eject the disc and it will not be finalized by the recorder until it is manually initiated. For the sake of comparison, any DVD disc recorded in VR's competitor V mode (or Video mode) will be automatically finalized before it is ejected by the recorder. Disc finalization is still required if the disc formatted for VR mode will be played in another DVD player.
Currently, users can only record in VR mode with the use of DVD-RW, DVD-RAM and DVD+RW discs, (updated in 2000 to accommodate DVD-R (General)) [DVD players marked “RW compatible” and “DVD Multi” can play DVD-VR recorded discs] and on some recorders, also on hard-disk drives.
Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD also support VR mode-like features.

Accordingly when DVD recorders became a viable option the features offered by <Video Mode> were minimal - the linear structure did not allow post recording editting or non-linear playback. Thus the DVD Forum devised Video Recording (VR) mode.

Unlike DVD-Video this uses a much simplier file structure that allows non-linear modification to the recorded data. This means features such as partial erase, editting, playlists, simulataneous record/playback, mixing of different media types (JPEG, MPEG1/2/4, MP3, WMA, WMV etc) and, in future models, dual record are all possible."

That basically summerises the differences: video is a linear recording that should end up DVD-Video compatible, VR is a digital recording mode that allows HDD-like functionality on disc.

Do you need to always be able play your recorded DVD-RW discs on other DVD Players? If yes you have to use Video Mode, although some players will play VR mode discs, and you can test this easily by giving it a go.

The main differences are:

DVD Video mode on DVD-RW

Plus points: Provides good compatibility (70% plus). That’s the only plus, plain and simple.

Negative Points: Only simple linear editing possible, really just hiding a title. You can reuse space only when you delete the last title or completely reformat but lose everything in the process. No defect management. Requires finalisation to play in other DVD Players. No possibility of time-slip, i.e. recording and playing back at the same time.

DVD VR mode (Video Recording)

Plus points: Better use of recording rates by having intermediate resolutions. Defect management so reliable. Time-slip on 2 speed media if supported by the recorder, allowing record and playback at the same time. Non-linear editing. Any space freed is reused automatically (think hard-drive or Mini-Disc) and added to the remaining time.

Negative Points: Not very compatible with existing DVD Players, plain and simple.

Of course if you have a hard-drive based recorder then all the negatives are wiped out, as you use VR mode on the hard-drive which gives you all the pluses of VR mode, then record to DVD-RW in Video Mode to give you the compatibility to play the disc elsewhere.
- A recording on DVD-RAM will always use VR mode
- A recording on DVD-R will always use Video mode
- A recording on DVD-RW can be either Video or VR depending which is set before the recording is made.
- A recording to DVD+RW or DVD+R will always use Video mode
- Many HDD/DVDR combi recorders will record to the HDD in VR mode and allow you to dub (digitally) to DVD-R in Video mode.
