Ever since Sony replaced the hdd in my laptop, my optical wheel mouse (plug 'n play, no software) doesn't work. The red light comes on when the laptop is initially turned on but goes off as XP boots up (and doesn't come on again). All USB ports work with my old trackerball mouse so it's not a USB malfunction. What XP settings do I need to re-jig to accept an optical USB mouse again?
Hi, You can try to: Right click on "My Computer", click on Properties, click on the Hardware tab, click on the Device Manager Button, expand your Mice and other pointing devices. verify that you 2 entries. One is the Sony builtin (Alps in my Vaio) and a HID-compliant mouse. The latter is your external optical wheel mouse. Make sure it does not have any red or yellow mark. Double click on the HID and verify that the next window says "This device is working properly." If not follow on screen instructions to enable or activate. Hope this be of some help. Good luck and pls post again how things turn up or if you need further information. Kind regards.
Hi again,
Just to inform you, I'm trying to simulate your problem on an old Sony VAIO PCG-F709 running XP Pro SP2. The only instance I'm having problem with the optical usb mouse (Logitech M-BJ58) is when I set the bios to default. Honestly, I've encountered problems of this nature with Linux but not with Windows. For the time being you may want to try checkinghttp://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/428/95... if you haven't done so and checkout any update or more appropriate drivers.
Will get back to you soon as I have more concrete info.

My Device Manager only shows the laptop's touchpad - not the optical mouse. The touchpad is the only mouse device shown.
As I said initially, the red light on the mouse does come on when the laptop is turned on, but turns off during the boot-up process (before the login screen asking which user I am).
I just plugged in my old trackerball mouse (into the same USB port) and it immediately shows in the Device Manager.
The optical mouse has been tested at work on a random PC and it works fine there - so this is definitely a Sony Vaio problem in that it refuses to acknowledge the optical mouse.
Does anyone have any ideas? All suggestions gratefully accepted!
Hi - I just realised that I'm in the wrong place. I don't have a Logitech mouse. Mine is brand name Genius. Although I have another no-name optical mouse which hasn't worked since Sony replaced my hdd, either.
Sorry to trouble you - S.
