Big enough propane tank? proper pressure reducing valve on the propane? Check both of those.

If your external by-pass is closed almost all the way then it will be your internal by-pass. You find this assembly inside the water manifold at the side of the heater. Part should be about 70-80 bucks.
It is suppose to regulate the water flow so it has time to heat but not boil. Yours is probally missing the control disc and letting all the water flow past the heater so the water in the heater is boiling and that is the banging you hear. Good luck.

Your pool chemistry is likely out of balance and leaving a residue on your heat exchanger coils. Had the same exact problem. Called a technician out and he said that I needed a new Heater after talking to Hayward. No warranty situation for sure. I went to the pool store, got 2 pieces of hose and hooked it up through my pump. Put a coil cleaner mixed with industrial vinigar and ran it for two days and all is good now. Solution after that was simply good chemistry in the pool. Salt water pool by the way.
