Brush roll won't turn only a few times

Hi, Just bought a Oreck upro14T refurbished vac off amazon. Put it together-double-checked and triple checked-turned it on-stepped on release to clean carpet nd the brush roll goes a few rotations, then stops. Tried the troubleshooting-still does the same thing-on any service on any position. brush rolls goes a few turns then stops. All else is fine. What can be wrong?

Unplug the machine and lay it on it's back with the handle release in the release position (the vacuum head should be laying flat also). Remove the foot plate from the vacuum head. Manually turn the brush roll (called a beater bar). The beater bar should turn fairly easily and the belt should turn the motor armature shaft (now would be a good time to check the inside surface of the belt for grooves or damaged spots which would cause the armature shaft to slip on the belt). If the beater bar has too much resistance to your turning it, I would suspect that the bearings at each end of the beater bar are fouled with hair, carpet fibers and string. Remove the beater bar from the machine and manually spin the motor armature shaft (where the belt contacts the motor) to see that the motor armature shaft spins freely. Remove the bearings from the end of the beater bar (they won't come off easily so you may have to use a prying tool such as a screwdriver). Try to spin the bearings. If they are fouled, dribble some rubbing alcohol into the bearing (I use a spray bottle... it's much neater) and turn the bearings while keeping them soaked with alcohol until they spin freely without ratcheting. Drop some 30 weight engine oil into the bearings until they are saturated, then clean the outsides of the bearings with a clean rag (no alcohol) until the outsides of the bearings are completely dry and no oil drips out of them (don't want the oil to attract dirt). You'll probably need to replace the belt. Reassemble the machine and it should work for you.

SOURCE: oreck xl

Sounds like the Oreck is clogged. You'll have to undo the bag by the way of the clip in the middle at the back of the main black spindel neck and then at the bottom. Then take apart the main neck by pushing the rubber mounts upwards to release the pip fitting locks and holes. You should find that either the top of the neck or the bottom - where the dust channel feeder is located - is clogged. Either that or there may be a clog in the main dust channel after the roller brush or wedged into the fan unit itself - the Oreck XL is a dirty fan system which means clogged dirt can often get stuck between the dirt and the dirt channel.

Don't panic! Easy fix!

I was having the same problem, but I removed the base plate from the bottom of the vaccum (5 screws on mine), revealing the roller and the engine. Just behind the roller is an intake tube. Mine had a piece of wrapping paper stuck in it causing everything else to clog up.

SOURCE: stopped running

orecks have a plastic fan inside and everything you pick up hits it, sometimes things can get stuck in there or break the fan locking up the motor. With the machine off, poke around where the dirt goes into the motor, behind the roller and see if you can pull anything out.

SOURCE: how do I replace the brush roll on my oreck xl??

Turn the vacume upside down. Remove the 5 screws on the bottom plate. 3 are near the brush roll, and 2 are near the back. Remove the bottom plate. take the belt off the motor end. pull up on both ends of the brush roll. Put new brush roll on making sure that you put both ends to the new position, not old. ( it is marked on one end, and there are marks on the side that goes up so the can match.)(If putting back the old brush roll you can switch to the old position. After a year or two you can switch the new brush roll to the old position.) Put the bels back on the motor shaft and then stretch and start the belt on the brush roll and rotate the brushroll by hand untill the belt is all the way on.
put the bottom plate back on and tighten the 5 bottom screws.

My Oreck platinum vacuum shuts off after a couple of seconds. Whenever I turn it on it works for 2 seconds then shuts off, any help?

Atek,
You may have received the wrong beater bar for your machine. Some of the Oreck's have an electronic sensor that detects the brush speed and the way they do that is to put a magnet embedded into the brush roll. Turn your vacuum over and spin the brush by hand and look for a metal dot about 1/4" in diameter. It should towards the end opposite of the belt. If you do not see that metal dot, you need to take the brush back to where you bought it and ask for the correct brush. If you ordered online then call them up and ask for a swap. Hope this helps!

Why does my brush turn?

Most likely the belt that connects the motor to the brush has broken and needs to be replaced. A relatively easy fix.

Oreck brush only turns a tiny bit and belt pulley get hot belt not turning much either

If your brush is not turning properly then you need to check the bearing ends to see if there is any hair, string, or thread wound around the brush shaft. If there is and you can remove it, that might fix your problem otherwise I would suggest getting a new brush roller.

Bissel easy vac roller won't work

remove brush roll and clean any string, hair, or whatever from it. especially around the ends. you can also unscrew the ends and check for debris there also. when you put ends back on use a little wd40 to lube up the bearings. if that doesn't work replace brush and won't hurt to change belt

The belt on my oreck XL 3600 is slipping. I replaced it with the one that came with the vacuum. It smells bad when we use it and the brush sometime doesn't spin.

Usually the belt that's stored in the groove on the bottom of the body is the correct one for the unit, and doesn't require much stretching to get it into the channel. If yours was in a bag of some sort then all bets are off.
I'll start as though you were installing one you had just bought from a dealer. Remove the bottom plate so that you can get to the motor and brush roll housing. This can usually be achieved by lay the unit out flat either on a table or the floor. With your NEW belt in hand, remove any pieces of the old belt and discard them. Remove the brush roll from it's housing and install the new belt over the drive end of the motor. Pull the opposite end up and over the drive portion of the brush roll. Now you'll have to maneuver the bearing shrouds into their respective support areas, usually by levering the drive end up and over the right end and then the idler end. Once done, rotate the brushroll by hand to make sure the belt is in the correct place. Replace the bottom plate, install the screws and you should be ready to vac.

Oreck upright hard to push

If hard to push, only a few things to check:

(1) Rear wheels will get hair or thread wrapped around axles, dust, etc. and be hard to turn. Make sure each wheel turns easily.

(2) Small wheels on newer models (since about 1997-98) toward front are worn, missing or have same problem as item 1.

(3) Brush roll not turning. The brush roll actually helps pull this unit along the floor, as it rotates in the "forward" direction. If the belt broke, and you do not realize it, it may suddenly seem harder to push.

Check that the beater bar is completely clear of thread, this will bring the brush roll back to normal. Also check the sides of the brush roll doesn't have anything such as thread or thick string at the sides.

Brush

Put the belt over the brush roll, set it in the middle, put the brush roll into the head and put on the bottom plate. Turn the big knob on the front of the nozzle to catch the belt, turn it until it locks into place. Then put the nozzole onto the front of the vac, then turn the knob all of the way the other direction, it will put it on the motor pulley.
