Mantis 2-stroke tiller won't start

Replaced spark plug. Checked spark plug gap, OK - put fresh gas & oil in tank. Sometimes starts, runs 5 seconds then stops. Sounds like flooding, but don't have owner's manual to help make adjustments. Any ideas? Thanks.

This could be one of several problems...
• Last year's fuel. Get some fresh gas.
• Every 2-stroke needs a new spark plug each year... you know what that means.
• Clogged carb jets due to storing the tiller over the winter with fuel in the system. Never, ever do that. Now you'll need to pull the carb apart and clean it. Most of the orifices are so tiny you can't see them. Good luck.
• Engine is so old the crankshaft seals have hardened with age. This is one reason no 2-stroke lasts longer than about 8 years. If the seals are shot, then it will cost more to fix than a new one costs. Time to toss it.

Hi, I have a 2 year old Mantis tiller, and just started tilling my garden and heard a screeching sound then the tines locked up. I checked for rocks but it was clean. I tried starting it but , but it will...

Screeching sounds are never a good sign. Dry bearings, seizing piston. Two Stroke or 4 Stroke engine? Appears to be two stroke, did you have oil in the gas?

The videos might help

2 stroke Mantis Tiller 1) Very difficult starting, when started, high rev works, but 2) Engine dies on deceleration. Carburetor is signed C1U K4589A. The priming pump does not suction, gasoline...

Hi there is a small stone fuel filter in the tank. this filter stops fuel from running back into the tank from the carb check to insure it still on and make sure there are no cracks or hole in fuel line that should fix your problem

Can not find my manual for the mantis tiller..forgot hot to start it up for the first time

You should be able to go to the Mantis web site and download the owners manual. To start, make sure the switch in turned on, push the fuel primer bulb several times (until you feel resistance), pull the choke out all the way and pull the starter rope until it fires. Then, push the choke half way in and it should start. Let it run a 30 seconds to 1 minute and then push the choke all the way in. Be sure you are using the currect fuel/oil mixture with fresh gas and oil. If you have not done so already clean the air filter and replace the spark plug at the recommended interval.

We purchased a mantis 2 cycle garden tiller new and have only used it 3 times. it has only been used maybe 1 hour total and now it wont start at all. what can we do to get it to start?

Empty mantis fuel tank. Remove and check spark plug. Replace with Champion CJ8Y or NGK BPM7Y if necessary. Gap is .6mm - .7mm or .024" - .028". Prepare fresh fuel/oil mixture. Add fresh fuel to tank along with 2 ounces of 100% acetone (available at walmart) - this will remove deposits inside of mantis from sitting for prolonged periods. Try to start several times. If unsuccessful let mantis sit for a while. Do this several times if necessary. Eventually it will try to start. If it will not remain started then you are successful in completing the previous section. Next you need to watch this video and do what it says. It is actually quite simple.

Gas coming out of exhaust, wont idle, dies when fuel is applied

Gas came out because it is flooded. Check the spark plug for damage.

If it has been sitting for a while empty fuel tank. Prepare fresh fuel/oil mixture to fuel tank. Add two ounces of 100% acetone (available at Walmart) and attempt to start several times. Let sit for several minutes. Repeat until it acts like it wants to start.

Then watch this video and do it:

Never let tiller sit with fuel for any prolonged period of time. Run it out of fuel before storing or sitting. Acteone will remove varnish from inside.

My mantis starts easily - but then dies. it sometimes doesn't even rotate. i can do about 3 seconds before it dies. help. what do i do?

The Carb is either cracked or needs to be rebuilt - OR - you might get luck and just blow it out with a professional dose of AIR from a larger compressor like used at mechanics shops.
