Nuvi 255, no maps intstalled, shows unlocked in detailed info

Locate the reset button, located on the back of the device, in the lower left corner. Remove the sticker covering the button, and use a straightened paper clip to depress the tab.

To reinstall maps

Connect your Garmin Nuvi to your computer via USB cable. You can only update the maps through connecting to your computer.

Open the "myGarmin" website and sign in with your Garmin account. Make sure to sign in with the account that you've purchased the map updates on.

Click the "myMaps" tab on the myGamrin dashboard. This will load a list of all of your purchased map upgrades.

Click the drop-down menu in the "Recent Map Purchases" section. Select your Garmin Nuvi from the list of devices.

Install the Garmin Communicator Plugin when prompted. This is required in order for the Garmin website to transfer the map files to your Gamrin software on your computer.

Download and install Garmin Express. This is the program that allows your computer to interact with your Garmin Nuvi.

Register your device in Garmin Express. If you haven't already registered your device, you'll be prompted to when you start Garmin Express. You'll need to register in order to update the maps.

Click the "Updates" tab in Garmin Express. This will show all of the available updates for your Nuvi, including the new map update you just purchased.

Click the "Show Details" option next to your Map Update. Click the "Install" button that appears. You will need to accept the agreement before the update installs.

Wait for the maps to download and install. Once you agree to the terms, the map update will begin downloading to Garmin Express, and will then be transferred to your Nuvi. This will likely take several minutes to complete.

Close Garmin Express and unplug the Nuvi when the update is complete. The Nuvi will reboot and begin installing the updated software on the device. This may take another couple of minutes.

Nuvi will show a picture of unit when plugged in to computer, its charging, connected this way is a slow charge.

You also use this way to update any maps or firmware for your unit.

If you have a new Nuvi.... and you are looking to set it up, you must first register to Garmin to unlock the maps its free.

Go to www.MyGarmin.com your unit will be detected and map unlocks will proceed

The "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" message may appear on your device for the following reasons:

• The GPS device is missing it's unlock code
• The maps on the GPS device have been disabled

To determine the cause of the message, touch the screen until the message "No Detailed Maps Found That Support Routing" disappears.

• If you see a "Can't Unlock Maps" message following this error, remove any microSD / SD cards in the device and follow the instructions below for Retrieving your unlock codes followed by the instructions for Creating an unlock file

• If you do not get the Can't Unlock Maps message then skip to the instructions for Enabling maps on the GPS device at the bottom of this solution
  

To retrieve your unlock codes you must first register your satnav if you haven’t already done so.
To registe;

• · Connect the satnav to your computer.

• · Go to www.garmin.com and select your country

• · Click on “myGarmin”

• · Click on “Register Your Garmin Product” and follow the prompts

You’ll be asked to create a username and password. Write them down and keep them safe as you’ll need them anytime you want to update your maps.
Retrieving your unlock codes:

1. Log into your myGarmin account
2. Select Manage Maps
3. Select Details
4. The unlock code is located under the Installed Maps.

Creating an unlock code file for PC:

1. Plug your Garmin device into the USB port
2. Double-Click on My Computer or Computer located on the desktop
3. Right-Click on the Garmin or nuvi drive
4. Click Explore
5. Double-Click on the Garmin folder
6. Right-Click in a blank space in this window
7. Move your mouse over the word New
8. Select Text Document
9. Press Enter / Return on your keyboard
10. Double-Click on the New Text Document. This will open the New Text Document in a window called Notepad
11. Type the unlock code that is listed in the Manage Maps section of your myGarmin account in all upper-case letters with no spaces
12. Select File
13. Select Save As
14. Change the Save As Type to All Files
15. Type gmapprom.unl in all lower-case letters for the File name
16. Select Save
17. Close the Notepad window
18. Delete the New Text Document file
19. Disconnect the GPS device from your computer

Enabling maps on the GPS device:

1. Touch the wrench icon on the Where to/View map screen
2. Touch Settings
3. Touch Map
4. Touch Map Info
5. Select the checkbox next to the maps to be enabled on the device

Press tools, then press settings, then press map. The map name should be shown with a tick beside it. If it's not ticked press the map name to tick it. Then it should be ok.

The only other reason you should have this problem is if the map is locked. You can unlock it by going to www.garmin.com. Click on My Garmin, if you've already registered the sat nav. Click on maps and you'll get your unlock code there. If you haven't already registered it you'll need to do so now to get into My Garmin.

There are 2 possible reasons for it to say there are no detailed map available. The most likely reason is that no map is selected. Press Tools, then Press Settings, then press Map and then Map Info. There should be a tick beside the name of the map installed on the satnav. If not press the map name to select it. A tick will appear at the side of the map.

The other reason is that the map may be locked. You'll need to go to My Garmin, and then Maps to get the unlock code.

Follow this below


Go to your account at garmin that you created to manage your maps.

Click myMaps

Click Manage Maps

You should see your unit and it’s unlock codes

Copy all the unlock codes for your device

Close your internet browser
Right click on your desktop

Click new, and then click a new Text Document

Click on the newly created Text Document icon from the desktop

Type your unlock codes into the document
Click File and Save as

Change the file name to gmapprom.unl (( double check this please ))

Change the “Save as type” to "All files"
Close the document

You should see the file gmapprom.unl on your desktop
Right click on the gmapprom.unl file and then click copy

Plug your Garmin device in and then click Computer/ My Computer
Click on the nüvi drive

Right click on the Garmin folder and click paste
Safely disconnect your Garmin device from the computer

Just go to http://www.garmin.com There will be a registeration link. Yes I think that you will get a free mapupdate with your registeration at least they used to do that. You will need your unit serial number and model.
