Can grill be safely converted to griddle on Thermador PRG486GLUS?

I have a Thermador model PRG486GLUS all gas range. It was purchased and installed in June 2000. I have regretted opting for the grill instead of the griddle since day 1. Grilling indoors requires a very loud and fairly ineffective vent-a-hood. Plus, I have a decent outdoor grill. A few years ago, I asked Thermador directly if conversion from grill to griddle could be done and they answered, without elaboration, "NO". In looking at the exploded parts diagram for both models, the griddle assembly differs greatly from that of the grill. I can understand that a complete retrofit is probably not practical. However, I've wondered if I can find a griddle plate that would essentially replace or fit over the grill grate. Such a griddle plate would need to measure no more than 22" x 10 3/4". My existing grill burner is rated at 18,000 BTU compared to the griddle burner which is advertized at 15,000 BTU. Input on the assumed safety of this idea would be appreciated. Also, if safety isn't an issue, can anyone recommend where a suitable griddle plate can be obtained?

I would love to know if you can do this. I too wish that I had chosen the griddle. Please let me know what you find out!

try this.

If it doesnt fit your specs. then i would suggest u find a thermador parts place and begin to buy the parts for the griddle as replacement parts. find a model of the stove set up that you want and make a list of all the parts that go to the griddle attachment.

My guess is that the reason for the flat "No" on the retrofit was that griddles require a thermostat similar to the one on the oven and broilers do not. So if their is no room behind the face plate where the knob would go then you can't put in a griddle. The other issue might be that the burners for the griddle wont line up with the brackets that are holding up all the broiler burners now. The griddle burner looks exactly like the one from the over only smaller so it has to line up strait where a regular front and back burner have to line up offset. maybe since you have the broiler already that should not be an issue? Then the problem is finding the griddle top it self that is going to be spendy. I think the link i gave at the top is your best bet. good luck.

Since I purchased my home the grill on my thermadore range does not work. When I move the knobs nothing happens, no clicking, no smell of gas. model PRG364GLUS.

Sometimes the orifice is clogged by a spidermite nest, or cooking grease. If you're confident with this sort of thing, remove the griddle/grill and the burner. Close to the valve there's a small brass piece that you have to remove and clean. DO NOT use a drill to clean it. Count the number of turns it takes to remove and re-install the same number of turns.

What is the difference between duel fuel or gas..? Does one allow you to change grill to griddle?

"Dual fuel" normally indicates that the appliance can use either natural gas or propane.

What is the product # for the conversion kit from nat gas to lp? who carries this item? Does the conversion kit come with a regulator?

Some Thermador ranges are not field convertable from natural gas to LP. The PRG364EDG falls in this category. If you have one that is not convertiable; you will need a different range.

The PG364GEBS is not a listed unit at Thermador; I've found it for sale at AJ Madison. Since that vendor doesn't list the conversion kit (and they sell ones for other Thermador ranges), I do not believe this is a field convertible unit.

Thermador has manuals and installation guides for many of their appliances here: http://www.thermador.com/trade/specifications-guides . Most Thermador ranges come with the installation guide, as well as the owner's guide, if you still have your documentation. Otherwise, try the Thermador site for the documentation (check if the company uses a different part number internally). If the conversion kit is available, the part number will be provided in the section on the Gas Requirements and Hookup. If it isn't, the installation guide will clearly state that fact.

Other models are convertible. The PRD304GHU uses the conversion unit: PALPKITHC. You will need to confirm your model since the number of orifices will depend on the number of burners and the low simmer feature. (The PRD304GHU is also a 4 burner with 2 of them extra-low simmer burners model.)

For units that are convertible, you can usually order the part through the same stores that sell the appliance. Alternatively, have your gas service installer order the parts. The installation guide for the conversion kit will be included in the kit. For most ranges that are field convertable, the regulator converts from natural gas to LP by rotating a cap in the regulator by 180 degrees. (Take out the part, turn it over so that LP shows and reinstall.)

I hope this helps and I wiish that I had better news for you.

I am interested in converting my thermador outside grill from propane to natural gass. My grill is about 8 years old. how should I go about it?

Hi an welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. I could go on and on about the how too convert it but I think you should really read this link first:

This is about the best info around.

http://www.grillparts.com/howto/conversion.htm

Having passed that information on... You have the following to consider.

1. Dual shut off valves for the grill. One near by and one at some distance in case the gas line catches fire.

2. You will need a Natural Gas regulator.

3. The burner orifices will have to be changed to NG

4. The burner itself will require an air adjustment to get the proper flame. Most burners are NOT adjustable so you may have to buy natural gas burners.

5. The gas supply line has to be installed by a certified and bonded installer.

I would visit either the location that your bought the the grill or.. a BBQ grill specialty store. I have not been in one yet that did not have someone on the payroll that could help you accomplish the conversion.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Kelly

It is not difficult to do.. You just have to do everything safely.

Thermador Gas Range - Griddle ignition will not spark

I have a Thermador Gas Range PG364GDBS - Oven, 4 burners, and center griddle. All are gas. The four burners and gas oven work fine. The griddle just stopped working, no spark. Turning on the griddle control, the gas valve opens(hear it), gas flows (smell it), but the ignitor will not spark (no loud or faint spark that I can hear). I got a replacement ignition device (mount at the burner) thinking it might be the problem, but still no spark. I checked the AC voltage at the terminal and measured 39 VAC between the terminal and ground. Not sure if that is the correct voltage. Any insights or advice would be great.

Thermador PCS364GDUS griddle needs cleaning.

Wear gloves, put all items in a garbage bag. Put outside and spray a can of easy-off oven cleaner on all parts. Seal bag and let sit for 24 hrs. They should come out looking new after you rinse them off. After you wash them off, put them in a 300* preheated oven for about 30 min to ensure they are dry.

Both ovens do not heat max heat is 150 to 200

good luck.  We have the same range and have had issues with the ovens since the range was installed.  The overn does not heat evenly on convenction or bake.  Thermadore doesn't stand behind the product and neither does the distributor.  They tell us that Thermador isn't standing behind the product so there isn't anything that can be done.  We spent $8000 for an oven that burns the back corners of everything we bake.
