This may be fairly obvious, but it's entirely possible that this TV doesn't have speakers.
The MU-42pm12x has "optional" speakers. Which means that your friend most likely had the audio running through a separate surround sound system.
So, while you've got things hooked up right, you won't get audio, because there's likely no speakers hooked up to the television.
Can you confirm with the (awesomely nice) friend who gave it to you, how he had it hooked up? Did he have the optional speakers?
Reset all settigns of your directv box .
Hi thanks for using fixya!!!
If still doesn't work, I suggest that you call a service technician accordingly to solve the problem of your tv.
Best regards!
you have to connect the cables properly, set the audio in and audio out connections properly to avoid static sounds.
better to consult a service technician so that he can check the boards before you gave that away. If its worth it and could repaired. Good luck!
Any news now with your tv?

Yes - your TV is worth repair.
Changing out the soundboard (if that is the problem) at most will be $100.
There may be some other problem an experienced Tech will see firstoff when opening it up, that will save you some $$ too. Leave it to a professional repairman. There is no end-user fix on this one.
Thanks for using FixYa!!
Please trouble shoot by toggling the plugs around. Might be that your AV cable is bad. If after this it still does not voice out, take the LG to LG service centre around your location it might be a factory defect though. Your product has a 12months warranty too. Visit http://www.lg.com
Open up the Back panel of the T.V .. i am sure you have some wires fried for teh speakers or a loose connection .... The pdf manual will help you doing so ..
let me know of any update .
First ensure that the TV is not muted, get an original remote and go to audio settings, this TV has nvram and does not reset settings completely when unplugging.
Also ensure that manual audio control is set to on on the audio menu, that can also cause the problem.
Test the TV with a dvd unit, better than using the box for testing.
To setup audio, follow carefully the instructions at page 20 and 21 on user manual here.
If you need to call a technician, then just describe situation as it is , they will probably tell you that you have a defective audio board inside the plasma TV.
If they had it running through thier surround sound amp, go into the audio menu and enable the audio to work from the tv's speakers. I would bet that is what it is. When you run these sets from your surround sound it mutes the internal speakers
Does your DTV box have a choice in the menu for the type of output it's using, both my Dish and my 3 flat screen tv's have a menu to select the audio/video type. Have you checked this and also as I mentioned did you go into the tv's audio menu and look to see if the tv's speakers are set to on or off ? that is what this sounds like, and is quite common when a client get's a new TV, So please check that, thanks
Ok when you go into the audio menu, does it say internal speakers on or off?

Check that you got the sound wires correctly, also svideo only has video, so you still need to wire the sound from the source to the telly.
Red and white, generally. double check.
Owners manual is at
http://www.hdtvsolutions.com/pdf/MU-50PM...
check that you got everything connected the right way.

Check the TV volume in menu and the mute function if it is off
You may need also to check the volume level of your cable box.
For this you may need to work with canble box remote
Good Luck

checked and re-checked!!!!!
I used the a/v cable along with s-video... I have also used multiple cable in the chance that one was defective...
the back of the tv does not just have the standard component inserts (red, white &yellow) just the red, white and s-video or red, white and video imput where i had to go and buy a BNC-RCA adapter.
I need to know if this is something that i could fix on my own or give a repair man
i have checked the manual and the service manual.....again and again....
Is there something specific that i would need to tell the technician so that i somewhat limit my cost...
....
the volume button is turnrned up and the mute is off...
the cable box does not have a volume control. but i am am able to to contect my computer spekers directly to the cable box and i have sound... this is too weird! the Tv is at least four years old is it worth taking to a repair shop?
no, none of the imput settings had sound... and i have reset the audio option in the menu. Someone suggested that it's possible the the TV does not have internal speakers. i'm not sure what to do now.
I just contacted LG and they said this this model does not have internal speakers...
thanks for your help! In the end.. it turns out that the TV hd no internal speakers, so i went out and bought speakers and connected them through the RCA jacks on the back of the tv. THe sound works, but there is really loud static which makes it almost impossible to hear the audio... I have tried two seperate sets of speakers.... any help would be greatly appreciated!
I may be calling it by the wrong name... i connected the speaker via the red/black speaker out put, where you lift up the button to thread the speaker wire through. I have bout two sets of speakers and two different guages if speaker wire 14 and 18. I have checked all the settings in the tv's menu and nothing changes.. is this sound card problem?
if so is it worth fixing or should i just give it away.....
well....
It turns out that it was not the TV at all... It was the directv receiver box that is giving the feedback / static sounds. I called direct to get a new box,,, but other than that thank you for all your help!
