Thanks, but how to get to the "service mode"?

Do I have to open back panel?

Do you mean turn the red drive off then on...or just adjust it?

  • chewie57 Jan 17, 2008

I have red snow (and other colors, but red is dominant) all over my screen. Noticeable when scene on the television is black. Our TV is 2 years old. I am so furious right now. Was told by a service company that it is "misfiring pixels" caused by a defective Control Board and/or the Y Sustain. Will cost $400-$600 to fix. They did tell me that we could unplug the TV from the source and wait 3-5 minutes for it to reset and that for some people it might take care of the problem. Maybe that would work for one of you. If anyone has luck contacting Toshiba, will you please let us know?

  • Krikiter Jun 27, 2008

Same here. Set was purchased in July '06, but the problem has only been getting noticeably worse in the last few months. I have dancing red pixels on black/dark backgrounds, regardless of input type or resolution. The problem is worse when cold, but still offensive when warm. The worst noise is at top and bottom center. At its worst I get red ghosting/trails when bright objects move against a dark background. I'm going to try to get an accurate diagnosis from a local repair shop and look into replacing the parts myself. It's a shame to be in this position with a TV that's less than 2 years old.

    I have the same issue....

how do i enter service mode?

  • Anonymous Feb 27, 2009

When viewing dark scenes, lots of red, some green, and a few blue sparkles appear. This is mostly concentrated in the upper left part of the screen.

  • sean567 Mar 28, 2009

I have red pixels in the left side of the screen and intermittently a line down the center of the screen. I am very nervous about taking the back off the tv, is there another solution?

Thank you for the solution. I had to adjust the setup all of the way clockwise, and there was still a little bit of red remaining. I found some other adjuster, and tweaked that a bit, and it went away entirely.

This problem was bothering me so much that I was going to replace the TV. After about 30 minutes of fiddling, I have a great picture again. Thank you for your help, everyone!

Hello to all that have Red or Green pixels in the dark areas of any given picture on your plasma screen. I can help your fix your plasma TV. All that needs to be done is an adjustment on the Y sustain board. You will need to remove the stand and the back cover from the TV. Then you'll want to reinstall the stand so that you can set the TV in the up right position. Then hook a dvd player up to the TV and put a movie in and push play. Once you get to where you have a picture on the screen that has a dark image on the screen and you can see the Red or Green pixels push the pause bottom on the DVD player. Know you what to locate your Y sus board. It is the board that is going to be on the Left side of the TV if you are looking at the TV from the back side with the back cover off! If you are not sure what board is the Y sus then please feel free to give me a call! I will guide you to the Y sus board! 1-503-432-9904 Ask for Dave! Once you have found the Y sus you will need to look closely at the board and you will find some Blue/Yellow adjusters on the board! One will say setup and the other will say setdn next to it. Do not touch any of the other adjusters on the Y sus other then the two that I have mentioned above. If you do you could end up damaging your y sus! So once you have located the two adjuster on the Y sus with setup and setdn next to them you will need to take a felt tip pin and make a mark on the top of both the adjusters so the you'll know where the factory setting is just in case you need to start over! start with the setdn! turn it counter clock wise if there is no improvement then turn it clock wise! if there is no improvement then put it back to the factory setting and try the same adjustment to the setup adjuster. You will need to have some one help you while you do this adjustment to the Y sus because the TV needs to be powered on while making the adjustment and thus you will need to pay attention to where you are sticking the screw driver because you do not want to shock the poop out of your self! So find some one that can watch the screen for you while you make the adjustments to the Y sus! If you feel like your unsure about anything regarding this advice I'm posting please feel free to give me a call I will be more then happy to answer any questions you may have. Ask for Dave @ 1-503-432-9904 / [email protected]

P.S.

If you are reading this post and you have a similar problem with your Plasma TV or any problem for that matter give me a call I will do my best to help you!

Dude!!! you are awesome... i just did exactly what you did except i went clock wise instead of counter clock wise and it was better....!!!! wow you are awesome. but i was wondering is there a way to help it not get so hot? i noticed the screen gets hot and i touched the back cover the big peice and it was also hot too? is it just because its plasma? anyways if you have any more information then email me at [email protected] thanks.

I called dave when I couldn't find the adjusters he was talking about in this post, and he walked me through the whole adjustment process over the phone. Tv is working great now , Thanks dave.

Had the same red ghosting issue with my Toshiba 42HP66 plasma. I went to the retailer I purchased it from who went into a litany of stories that ranged from Y boards to new plasma panels. I contacted a local independant repair guy who had helped with an old Toshiba tube unit a while back, he said let me come "adjust" that out. He did just that, pulled all the wiring connections off, removed back, turned it on with no antena (the red ghosting was verry apparent with some very distinct burn-in graphics) he adjusted it out! No new panels, parts, just an adjustment. Charged $75 paid him $100 was so happy to have a hi def pic back. JS

Slightly adjusting the Setup and Setdown Pots (Little blue square thingys with a Yello center for you non techie types) on the Ysus board totally eliminated the red sparkles I had after I replaced the Ysus card. The set now has a great image.

Try going into the service mode and turning down the red drive. The problem is the red pixels fireing on their own on the black background This TV has major problems mine has the same problem they should recall this model! But they wont. I had mine for just a year and the red was there since the begining and now its worse. I bought a new TV from costco and the warranty is for 2 years and with AMEX they add another year. 3 total. The new set is 1080p with faster chips and LCD for 1199 90 day return

Toshiba 42HP66-Have sound. Picture starting getting light. Now screen is black when first turned on but picture eventually lightly "bleeds" thru.

The main power supply regulator section circuit fault. Either it will be a separate board, or the part of main board. Check and replace damaged component/s at its main power regulator [SMPS] section circuit. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. It will be best to replace the power supply regulator board as card basis rather than making "Surgery" to it; which usually will make loss for both money and time. Even though you can make it right, it will cost around an amount equal to the cost of a new board; including the cost of (spare parts + service charge) More to say, most of the spare parts to it will be difficult to get from open electronic spare part market. This is true to most of the flat panel TV power supply boards; irrespective of its brand and screen size.

What caused my screen to go black

Other than a possible back light issue:

All of this type of sets only sellcircuit boards and no individual parts--some even slip around that and partsare not available.

Sound but no brightness is a common issue:

Backlight's inside not coming on.

Problem from a cable box causing main board to lock up and no brightness results--sometimesunplugging set and box will fix but not always.

Almost any circuit board in the set bad--nice one ?

The front screen unit or Panel bad--does happen and is fatal.

There are a number of different things possible, weigh the cost and age of theset and decide if you want to gamble having a shop look at it.

Most who try to repair it themselves guess and buy a board, can get expensiveand is no guarantee you will actually fix the set.

My Toshiba 42' Plasma TV has red Dots everywhere popping up randomly and sometimes not at all.. The Model code is 42HP95. Also happens on my 42hp66.

I have a 50hp66 and I had the same problem. But it was easy to fix. I opened up my plasma and found the adjustment pots labeled Vsc and Vy. Then I took a sharpie and marked where the factory defaults were first. Then I lowered the Vy down a little and the problem was solved. It was so easy. My tv looks like new.

My TV has sound but No image!!!

a 42hp66 is a plasma set,, the y-sus or the z-sus circuit board has probably gone bad.. as these are expensive parts you might want to have a technician determine which one of the two is bad before ordering both of them
