Homelite 26gc trouble starting. started and ran for a few minutes, but then died. Now can't start. Emptied gas and found what appears to be a small filter sitting in bottom of gas tank: mettle end, soft white center cylinder, mettle nipple with black rubber. What is this and how to put back in place?

That's your fuel filter.
It needs to be/has to be connected to the fuel line going from the carb into the gas tank to get gas to the carb.
Make sure your fuel line is not broken/split.

SOURCE: yard machine tiller won't stay started!

There is a small diaphram on the side of the carb that simply wears out. It's rubber coated mesh and the rubber coating breaks down and it stops pumping fuel into the carb. Sometimes you can run with the choke on partially, but it will burn 10 times the amount of fuel and cause more damage to the engine itself. I think it's about a $10.00 part.

SOURCE: Lawn mower engine runs rough and puts out white smoke

Pull the carburetor and clean it for staters.Be sure to change oil any little bit of moisture in the crankcase will let it smoke white by seeping by the valves and piston rings. Also put a little small amount of dry gas in the gas tank to rid all of the water that may have been left in the tank. I some of this will help you.

SOURCE: 2006 Arctic Cat ATV dies after about 15 minutes of riding

Sounds as if the gas tank is not breathing properly. The next time you run it, when it's about to die, loosen the gas cap. It should begin to run again. This is a sure sign that your gas cap is clogged. Clear gas cap of debris, or buy a new one.

Motorcycle sputters and has trouble starting

My guess would be you had water in the fuel. going up the hill put the water in the floatbowls right in the pickups for the carbs and going down pulled the water away.

Leaf blower works for a few minutes real good then dies

Could be a fuel tank breather issue, when it starts to die just slacken off the fuel cap to allow some air into the tank, if it picks up again then it is a breather issue.

99 chevy s10 ran out of gas, put gas in it and it starts runs for about a minute and then sputters and dies like there is no gas

Check your fuel pressure for a 4.3 it should be 60-66 psi with key on engine off. And for a 2.2 it should be 41-47 psi with key on engine off.

Started homelite 16 in (the jd 3816 model- new plug and started on a small dose of raw gas--got it running but won`t open full thr ottle- this saw has had very little use- oh put in new j-8 plug but once...

Either that season's gas dried in the carburetor affecting it's operation or you are drawing air through a fuel seal somewhere. Both are common with this model. Sometimes will start from cold and run up to half speed until you take the choke off. Then it just dies from not drawing gas. Status proved if it revs up if sprayed with short blip of ether from 7" away at the moment it dies. Do not try to keep it running on ether more than a minute. Like pure gas, it'll burn up the engine or worst. Do not use ether if the air is not moving. Ether may collect and explode.

Chain saw ran for a few minutes became hot with little smoke and now will not start again.

It could get hot and not start if the saw was quite dirty because it relies on air for cooling and if the fins can't get enough air around them it would heat up and not start. Another thing is if some one did not use the correct gas oil mixture it would get hot and score the cylinder lowering the compression causing it to not start.
