here is the solution:
The date and time can be included on the pictures taken only with the camera in
postcard mode. You must also activate the
date stamp option in the menu.
To set the camera into postcard mode, press the [
Func.] button on the camera, then use the [
arrow down] key to go down to the last option in the menu, and there you can choose the [
Postcard mode]. Press [
Func.] again to exit the function menu.
To set the date and time stamp, press the [
Menu] button and then use the [
arrow down] button to go to the [
Date stamp] option in the menu. You can set this to "Date" or "Date & Time". Press the [
Menu] button again to exit the menu.
your date and time are set now
congratulations!

i really don't understand why this is so. i found time and date stamps very helpfull while browsing through numerous photos on my computer and to not have this option available in "normal" shooting mode is nothing short of ridiculous.
is there any way to make this option available in other shooting modes???
