SOURCE: AF 70-300 causes error 99 in my Canon 300D

This is usually a torn flexible circuit or binding aperture in the lens. It'll have to go to a repair shop for replacement. About a $80 job.

SOURCE: Tamron 200-500mm lens on Canon 40D ... when I put

Try gently cleaning the electronic contacts on the lens's mount with an eraser. This will remove any mild oxidation on the contacts. If this doesn't resolve the problem, then contact Tamron and ask if there are any issues using this particular lens with a Canon 40D.

SOURCE: Error 99 with a Canon

Welcome to Fixya
Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....

Here's what you can try:
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

Thank you for using Fixya!

SOURCE: I have a tamron aspherical 28-80 lens. The inside

Do not attempt to disassemble your lens. If it is dirty enough to effect the quality of your images then bring it to your local camera service shop and have them clean it for you. Or better yet send it to Tamron and let the true experts clean it. Tamrons USA contact info is: Tamron USA, Inc. 10 Austin Blvd.

Where would I find the serial number on a Tamron 90mm Canon macro lens?

all of my Tamron lenses have the serial number on the barrel of the lens right next to the "Made in Japan" label. When the lens is in the camera the MIJ label is on the bottom side. I hope that helps with your lens

How can I determine which Sigma and Tamron lenses will work with my Nikon D3200? (I know they have to fit my Nikon F mount.)

There are three things you have to consider when getting lenses for the D3200.

First, you already know that the lens has to have the Nikon F mount.

Second, in order to autofocus, the lens must have a focus motor since the D3200 doesn't have one itself. Sigma designates lenses with the focus motor as HSM. Tamron designates theirs as USD. Lenses that don't have the focus motor will still work with the D3200, you just have to focus manually.

Third, the lens must have the electronics to communicate with the camera in order for the exposure meter to work. Any Sigma or Tamron lenses designed for digital cameras will have the electronics. Older mechanical lenses, including those from Nikon, will still work with the D3200, but you must set the exposure manually, without any help from the camera's light meter.

Does tamron 80-210mm work for Nikon d90

Tamron makes their lenses with a variety of lens mounts. If your lens has a Nikon mount then it will mount onto the D90.

I have a nikon d60... is the tamron 70-300 zoom lens compatible ?

Tamron makes their lenses with a variety of mounts. A lens with a Canon mount, for example, will not fit a Nikon. Assuming the lens has a Nikon mount then yes, it is compatible with the D60. However, the D60 lacks an autofocus motor, relying on the lens to have one. Some Tamron lenses have such a motor, some do not. Such lenses will not autofocus with the D60, but everything else still works, including manual focus.

My lens no longer auto focuses and is continually hunting the image, I have confirmed it is a lens problem by changing camera and lenses and it is only the tamron which is a problem

Unfortunately this is a risk when you use third-party lenses. The camera manufacturer's lens to body protocols are not open source nor do they licence the technology to alternative suppliers, so all that companies like Tamron can do is to try and reverse engineer the system.

You only have two possible fixes:-

1. Replace the lens with a Sony Alpha model; or

2. Contact Tamron to see whether they offer an update service for your lens.

The latter is certainly possible with some brands/models, but the costs have historically varied between "you pay just the shipping and handling" right up to "it's cheaper to buy a new lens".

So you either pay a high price for Sony Alpha genuine lenses which are guaranteed to always work with Sony Alpha bodies and firmware updates, or pay repeatedly for third party lenses. "You pays your money and you takes your choice".

If the lens has been dropped (grass surface), and there is definitely some damage done to it (something is loose inside), what is the best method for getting it repaired?

I think if everything works good you don't need to get it repaired. Otherwise you'd better go to an authorized tamron service to get it repaired. And next time be careful with you camera.

The Quantaray 70-300mm lens

Only if you get the version with the built-in autofocus motor. The D3000 lacks a mechanical AF coupling so AF lenses which need to be driven by a motor in the camera body will require manual focussing.

Either way, you're far better manually focussing the Quantaray/Tamron 70-300mm: the AF performance is very slow, very noisy and hunts around a lot to achieve focus.

Although the Quantaray and Tamron versions are identical lenses, if you have to buy this low-quality budget model then go for the Tamron: it's absolutely no better lens quality (and usually the same price), but the manufacturer's warranty from Tamron is much better than Ritz and is internationally valid. If you resell the lens then the Tamron will have some value (not much though) and the Quantaray will be near worthless as it's not so widely known, and has a poor reputation amongst those familiar with the brand.

"Cheap" isn't always the same as "good value"...

Dirt inside back lens element

The dirt has gotten onto the front element of the rear lens group. You do not want to try partially disassembling the lens to clean it. Either Tamron or a good camera lens repair technician should be able to perform what is called a partial internal CLA (cleaning, lubrication and adjustment) of just rear portions of the lens for fairly cheap. Alternatively you may be able to pick up a used Tamron 28-200 in excellent condition for less than the repair cost of your current lens. If successful, then you could turn around and sell your 28-200 for parts or sell it to someone who knows how to service it.
