Hi.There are a set of instructions that we need to follow for the upgrade process. You can increase the amount of RAM (random access memory) in the notebook with an optional memory module approved by Compaq. The notebook contains 2 memory slots, one of which is accessible for an optional memory module upgrade. Please refer to think link and select the Hardware Upgrade option in the list in the file which will guide you thru picturised views for helping in the memory upgrade.Link is : http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00090108.pdf.

Http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00090108.pdf this is the location you go to it will show you how and where the memory is.
Since you didnt tell me which type of OS you had and Processor I just took a wild guess. But the little door should be on the bottom of the computer.

Presario sr1710nx what type memory

Crucial.com has an excellent wizard for locating memory.
Computer memory upgrades for HP Compaq Presario SR1710NX Desktop PC...

Lists memory compatible with your machine.
Memory Type: DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 4icon_note.gif Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.

I have also found that the memory occasionally is not recognized. To fix remove the ram and clean electrical contacts with a clean pencil eraser. (Rub the contacts to clean.) Then replace memory. (My machine failed to boot, cleaning the contacts fixed the problem.

Compaq Presario R3000 2GB memory upgrade problem. I am having problems upgrading my Presario from 512 MB (2 x 256) to 2 GB (2 x 1GB). If both 1 GB DIMMs are installed, I get intermittent application...

Try a different brand of memory.

It is unlikely you can do anything with the memory you have to fix this problem.

The memory has the same specs as what another manufacturer recommends.

Be careful buying from auctions as they MAY be gradeouts. Always make sure you can return the product. Crucial has these for about $114 for your machine as an example.

I want to upgrade the memory on my compaq presario r3000 laptop this is not a problem as I have located the memory cards. However it recommends a bios upgrade and this is a minfield for the uneducated like...

No disrespect but it is apparent that you do not posess the required skilss to perform a BIOS upgrade.

Even with a step by step guide it would be easy to brick your BIOS and leave your Lappy unusable.

If I were you I would pay a professional to do it.

Upgrade memory for Compaq Presario R3000 PC Notebook

What OS are you running? 768 should be enough to run XP and keep you from getting that error message. On laptops their are normally just 2 slots for ram, so you would need to replace the 256 with the 512, which would bring you up to a gig of ram. Do you know if your computer has any spyware/adware on it? Sometimes malware can take up all your memory and generate just such an error. Do you know how many processes are running when you first login? Thank you.

Wireless connection

Hi, what you will need is a PCMCIA wireless card or usb wireless stick, these can purchased pretty cheaply these days from the likes of ebay or your local computer shop should be able to sort you out. PCMCIA would be the one I would choose as these just slot into an empty bay and once installed, can be left there. Hope this helps, if not give me a shout and I'll see what else I can do. Si :)
