Formatting IBM Thinkpad 600E

I've got this old laptop that I've been trying to format and install win98 on for my kids. It won't boot from the cd, despite going into the bios and making the appropriate changes. When I popped in a win2k disc, it wouldn't let me format, even though i asked for a clean install, i now have 2 OS's to choose from, both win2k. I don't have a floppy drive, no original disks, just the cd rom and various different OS's.

Any idea's on how I can do a format and a clean install of win98?

Thanks, that's a great idea. My husband is familiar with Linux, maybe he can give it a shot.

I know you can't boot from the Windows 98 CD, and probably not from Windows 2000 either. It is possible to turn the the Windows 98 bootable floppy into a bootable CD, but I think you would be much better of trying to install Linux.

IBM Thinkpad 600e (2645),error 189 and could not installing win98

Usually this means a hardware failure. I would suggest reseating the CMOS battery overnight to reset the system. Also you might want to replace it as well. It could also be more serious such as a motherboard component failure.
Also IBM error code # 189 according to Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PC's (8th edition) - "Excessive incorrect password attempts." Is there a password on your CMOS ?
Also try hitting ESC key on boot to bypass. Good luck!

IBM Thinkpad 600E 2645 not boots

Format the harddrive and install an Operating System of your choice.

PS: You can probably disable that memory check in your BIOS to speed up your boot time as it is not necessary.

How to get into the Dos prompt at reboot for the IBM ThinkPad 2645?

Vince,
First of all, What operating system do you have on this machine?
If it's Win98, you can get DOS.
If it's WinXP, you will have to make a bootable CD to get into the DOS prompt.
Check out this link :
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

You can also get into the setup from CD, by changing the boot sequence from BIOS. (If the installation CD that you have is a bootable CD)

Hope this helps.

Thanks & Good luck!
