Ice build up in back section of a Whirlpool no frost top freezer refrigerator 66"hx30"wx27"d

Hi! This Whirlpool No Frost refrigerator with top freezer builds up heavy ice every 10 days on the back section of the freezer. Then the cold air flow stops to the refrigerator and it no longer cools and spoils the food. The defrost works. After removing all of the food and defrosting it thoroughly, it becomes okay for about week and a half and the problem appears again. Please help. Many thanks.

Hi, and thanks for your reply. I don't know as to what you mean regarding whether or not the defrost cycle works right. When I defrost it after the ice build up, it defrosts clean. If the defrost cycle is malfunctioning when it is supposed to work on its own for the "NO FROST" feature and not doing that properly, then I would say there is something wrong with it. But as far as the manually defrosting it, yes it works. Aside from the defrost element, can it be the Thermostat or the Timer? Are these all behind the back section of the freezer? How can I test them? What am I looking to see?
    Thanks again!

Your sure the defrost cycle works? sounds to me its not. you need to remove the freezer back and check the defrost components. or put it in the defrost cycle and see if it is working. to get that much frost as you describe the dor would have to be left open. also check all door seals. let me know what you find and we can go from there

I have a whirlpool refrigerator model #GT15HTYMQ81

The refrigerator is supposed to self-defrost approximately four times in every 24 hour period. If one of the components in the self-defrosting system fails, the refrigerator continues to try to cool. Eventually, though, so much frost builds up on the evaporator coils that the circulating fan can't draw air over the coils. There may still be a small amount of cooling because the coils are icy, but with no air flow over the coils, cooling in the refrigerator compartment is quite limited. Here's an inexpensive, though inconvenient, way to determine if the problem is with the self-defrosting system. Remove all of the perishable food from the refrigerator and freezer, turn the thermostat in the refrigerator to Off, and leave the doors open for 24 to 48 hours. (Be sure to have several towels ready in case the melting frost and ice causes the drip pan to overflow). This allows the refrigerator to defrost "manually." When the frost and ice build-up has completely melted away, turn the thermostat back to a normal setting. If the refrigerator then cools properly, it indicates a problem with one of three components in the self-defrosting system: Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils. You can't see these coils without removing a panel on the inside of your freezer. A sure sign that there is a build-up is the presence of any frost or ice build-up on the inside walls, floor, or ceiling of the freezer. Such a frost build-up usually indicates a problem in the self-defrosting system or damaged door gaskets. The defrost timer The defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch)

The defrost cycle on this fridge is not working. Ice is building up, restricting the air flow to the food section causing the area to warm up, the defrost components need to be tested to find the fault

Hi,

Normally when frost build up occurs it's because warmer outside air is getting into the freezer and the moisture from that warm air cools and condensates then freezes into frost or ice. You either have a bad seal like the other listing states try leveling the front a little higher than the back. Or you may have an issue with the defrost heater, thermostat or timer. Do you have a light that comes on from time to time? If so you have an auto defrost unit. If there is no light you may not have a frost free freezer which means you will have to remove the frost manually.

Refrigerator is barley cold, still makes ice, condensation inside of frostless freezer

Hi: The fact that it still makes ice tells me the freezer is a zero degrees. When you said condensation in the freezer did you mean frost? If your defrost heater fails it will cause the frost free freezer to build up frost. The frost will build up and block the vent that supplies the cold air to the fresh food. The defrost heater is behind the metal wall at the back of the freezer, at the very bottom. A glass tube with a metal coil in it. The coil can break and stop the defrosting. Replace that. Use a hair dryer to melt the frost from behind the panel. All of it top to bottom. You need to remove all the frost to free up the airways. I hope this helps, Jeff

Whirlpool fridge with top freezer.( no ice maker )

check if you have frost build up at the back side of the freezer section.

if you do, then it is a defrosting problem.

you could have a problem with the defrost timer, the defrost heater , or the bi-metal.

if there is no frost accumulation, that would be something more and you have to elaborate on what you observe with the unit to help me further troubleshoot your unit.

Freezer cold but not fridge

too much ice bulid up will stop enough cold air being blown into the fridge.Try turning it off letting all ice melt then turn it back on again and set thermostat at a lower temp. There may be ice you can't see.

Fridge wont stay cold in the bottom.

Your frost free is not defrosting properly. There should be no ice buildup in the freezer section. Frost in the freezer section stops air circulation to the refrigerator section.

Whirlpool top freezer problem

Check for frost build-up behind back wall in freezer. If there is a heavy frost build-up, it's not defrosting. This will restrict airflow to refigerator section and can stop fan. If fan is stuck again and it's not because of frost, replace evaporator fan motor.
