I suspect one end of the crossfader pot has broken from the element. The fader probably costs less than $5.
You likely will have to remove all the knobs and some screws to seperate the board with the fader from the front panel so you can replace the fader.
VERIFY the pot is bad with an ohmmeter before dis-assembling however.
You MAY be in luck. It looks like the cross fader has a connector which MIGHT allow you to remove it or certainly only a small board for replacement, seeing these take abuse.
It appears that the cross fader is a dual 100K type B taper.
Hi WWW_SOCRAFTI, you can easily download both the Owner’s Manual and Parts List manual for your K5SS mixer online from the KA website at: http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides>Enter the 6 character model number, in your case use KSM50P (Your K5SS mixer falls within this model range), and then select this file: KSM50PPWH0.pdf (5156.65 KB) from the Owners Manuals (9) list and this file: KSM50P.pdf (438.31 KB) listed under Parts List (4).Check to verify they match your mixer model. You can save them to your PC hard drive, and then you can print a hard copy if you wish, or just refer to it when you need to use it. The reason I suggest downloading the Parts List manual is that should you decide to try and troubleshoot and fix your KA mixer, this manual will be invaluable in the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer along with listing all the part names and numbers.Having the correct part names and numbers is critical when reordering replacement parts when your mixer eventually will stop working. Good Luck with your mixer, I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA If this solution has been helpful to you, please rate it, thanks! -hslincoln
Hi JBKRIEGER, Happy New Year!Yes you can download both your Owners Instruction Manual and Parts List Manual from the KA website at: (http://www.kitchenaid.com/flash.cmd?/#/page/home). Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals& Guides> and enter the 6 character model number and then select the appropriate files under Owners Manual for your Instruction and Recipe manual and the file under Parts List for your parts list manual. The Parts List manual provides an exploded view for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the part names and numbers.(Definitely check to see it this matches your mixer). You may not need it now, but if your mixer is out of warranty and you want to attempt to troubleshoot and fix your mixer yourself if something goes wrong with your mixer, you’ll definitely need that parts list manual. Good luck with your KA mixer, Howard, Burke, VA. If this solution was helpful though, please rate it. hslincoln
If all other functions work for those channels, the most likely problem is the fader itself. These can fail and operate more like switches rather than faders. Without witnessing the behavior, I can not state that for sure. While these mixers are not the hardest to work on, they are time consuming. The faders can be purchased from Mackie directly. If you need to have this repaired, any shop that repairs audio gear should be able to erpair this for you. Where are you located?
I have found a part number for a cross fader kit although this might only be the faders. Can you get the number off of hte board itself and post it here? I'll research this a bit more.
