My friends Dell Inspiron 600M screen goes black after being able to see the Windows screen. Some time she gets to logon in both and then it goes black whether or not she clicks the logon. She can hear the hard drive and sees system lights.
If it displays fine to an external monitor without going black, then, unfortunately, it sounds like you have a problem with the laptop display. Backlight might be going out. Either you can just get an external monitor and leave it connected or have it repaired. I'm not sure you wan to try this yourself unless you're especially adventurous. You'd have to get the service manual and start replacing parts(an example of a parts store).
Bootlog file: logs boot failures
Oh yea, if you can see everything fine on an external monitor and everything works, that means you don't have a boot failure BTW.

Hi,
Pressing F8 during startup, just after the BIOS screen, will give you the
safe mode menu, including the option to create a '%windir%/ntbtlog.txt'
bootlog file
or you can try to restore xp:

I'll try an external monitor. Thank you
What does the bootlog file do?
It displays to an external monitor. Using the FN & F8 keys she can switch back and forth but the laptop lcd goes out to black in seconds. She can see the lcd laptop screen with a flashlight
Thank you for taking the time. My friend will keep the external connected until she makes up her mind. She lives rurally. So she may wait until I come up and we will decide then. The laptop is 8 or 9 years old and has had good use. --Maureen
Does it still display to an external monitor?
