Problem with my Mac laptop just starting to freeze-up

I am having a problem with my laptop just starting to freeze-up and an alert screen telling me the computer needs to re-start by holding the power button down for 5 seconds. It does this every 2 hours or so.
Any ideas? re-starts fine but happens again later.
Is the hard drive on its way out? Laptop is only 18 months old.

Well there's 3 possibilities which comes to my head:
1. Least possible: You have a strange virus (it's least possible, because almost no one makes viruses for Mac). Try checking with some antivirus.
2. Possible: there's some error with drivers or OS (i know, MacOS X is much better than Windows, but no one is perfect, right?). Because MacOS = drivers +OS, try reinstalling it.
3. Most possible: Something is wrong with your hardware. And I think with your cooler. In that case this explains, why you're asked to restart - the system tries to prevent overheating.

Mac tells me to shutdown by pressing the power button and the screen freezes

Your MacBook is over heating. You need to put some cooling paste to replace the old dried up paste that is on the processor and video card before it burns out the logic board. Clean out the fan while your doing this also.

During start up my ibook g4 freezes at the blue screen, which appears after the grey apple. why is that happening?

The blue screen marks the start of the login process. If the Mac freezes there, it usually indicates that some third-party System Preference is hanging the boot process. There are several ways to diagnose the problem. The simplest is to hold down the Shift key after hearing the boot chime. This will disable third-party System Preferences and should allow you to come up to the login screen. Then you can review the third-party preferences and go to the website of each of them to make sure you have the most up-to-date version that is compatible with your level of the Mac OS.

Kernal panic alert screen will not respond

Well, if you erase the wrong files, you'll sure get a kernel panic.
To power down your PowerBook when there is a kernel panic on the screen (or any frozen state) you have to hold the power button for 10-15 seconds until the Mac shuts off. Then you can restart it.
If you deleted too many of the wrong files, it may not restart to your satisfaction. :-(

Ibook g4 freez

Freezing is a HD problem. Do you hear clicking sometimes? Sometimes on boot up is there a foler with a questionmark in it? I would get your hard drive looked at, this is the reason disc utility fails. Your hard drive has a hiccup.
